The book highlights the critical, yet largely undocumented, contributions and struggles of self-funded migrants from the former Yugoslavia (primarily Dalmatian Croatians) who shaped the Western Australian mining industry. Focus Population: While officially recorded under the umbrella term "Yugoslavs", the majority of these migrants were Dalmatian Croatians fleeing economic hardship and political instability in Europe. Industrial Contribution: Migrants worked grueling jobs as boggers, truckers, and machine miners. Crucially, they made up 75% of the woodcutters on the "woodlines" providing fuel to sustain the world-class gold mines. Second Largest Group: The research reveals that Yugoslavs were the second largest migrant group on the WA Goldfields during this era, surpassed only by the Italians.
