Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. "A landmark Australian historical novel depicting the rise and fall of the Hyde family across three generations of Sydney's colonial era. Written by two young Sydney University graduates under the pseudonym M. Barnard Eldershaw, this work won the prestigious Bulletin £1000 Prize for best novel by an Australian author. The narrative spans from 1837 onwards, following ex-Navy quartermaster James Hyde's establishment of a mercantile enterprise on Sydney's waterfront and its overwhelming impact on his family's fortunes during the gold rush years. Themes of commerce, class, gender roles, and the tension between English propriety and colonial pragmatism unfold with psychological depth and historical authenticity. A cornerstone text of early Australian literary canon. Details ISBN: Not stated Publisher: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd Author: M. Barnard Eldershaw Illustrator: Not Stated Country: United Kingdom Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Publication Year: 1929 Printed In: Great Britain Condition First edition hardcover in original burgundy cloth boards with gilt titling. Spine shows period browning and minor wear consistent with age; boards display typical foxing and edge wear. Pages retain the warm cream tone of period printing stock with scattered foxing throughout, particularly at fore-edges and opening pages. Text remains sharp and fully legible. The accompanying dust jacket is present with notable wear—the spine shows fading and creasing; edges display chipping and small closed tears; overall colour and design remain discernible. This is an honest vintage copy reflecting a century of existence, ideal for serious collectors seeking the original cloth and jacket presentation rather than later reprints. Postage Group 3 applies.".…
