'This is the story of Joanna Lewison, whose mother died in giving her birth, whose father was never seen again, who was brought up by a rabelaisian, gin-soaking Granny in a New Zealand small town. It was not surprising therefore, that she fell for the urgent wooing of young, ambitious Dr. Denniston and agreed to marry him with little understanding of what that marriage entailed.
