Scarce & early map of Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania. The French edition of this scarce map, also published in a notoriously scarce English edition in 1822. Evans was the surveyor general at the time, and his map is considered the finest of the early post-settlement maps of Van Diemen's Land and the first survey map of the island. Besides the coast, the only inland detail is along the route from Hobart to Launceston, including the outline of land grants. Copper engraved, 45.5 x 57.5 cm plus margins, original folds, some offsetting. Printed on laid paper, watermarked B (heart symbol) R. The lower margin has a damp mark & a small chip, both outside the impression mark. A very nice copy of an extremely scarce map. Tooley p. 204, p. 316, no. 210.
