Written in the vernacular rather than Latin, the calendar reflects the popularity of devotional manuscripts, especially the often coined "bestseller" the Book of Hours among lay patrons in later medieval Fran…ce. The survival of the entire calendrical section as a coherent unit is especially important. The calendars often provide the clearest evidence for identifying the regional and liturgical affiliations of the lost parent manuscript. Calendars formed one of the essential components of Books of Hours by structuring the liturgical year through the cycle of saints' feasts and important feast days celebrated hildaiy within the Christian caledar. Before the widespread use of mechanical clocks, calendars provided the primary framework through which time itself was organized and experienced. Entries were arranged according to the traditional Roman system of Kalends, Nones, and Ides, while feast days connected the rhythms of daily life to local religious memory, regional cults and the wider Christian world. This calendar follows a broadly Parisian or northern French structure of observed feast days while preserving a remarkable concentration of saints and commemorations associated particularly with Bourges and Orléans, cities southwest of Paris in the Loire region. Two important Bourges saints — Saint Guillaume of Bourges (10 January) and Saint Ursinus of Bourges (29 December) — are prominently rubricated in red. In medieval calendars, so-called "red-letter days" were feast days written in red ink rather than black, indicating celebrations of elevated importance such as major feasts, local patrons, diocesan saints, or observances of special liturgical rank. The modern English expression "red-letter day," meaning an especially important or memorable occasion, ultimately derives from this medieval practice. The prominence of Guillaume and Ursinus is especially significant, as both saints are repeatedly associatedwith Bourges-related Books of Hours and liturgical traditions. Other saints closely associated with Orléans include Saint Euverte (7 September) and Saint Aignan (17 November), both bishops intimately connected with the city's ecclesiastical history, though in this calendar they are written in black rather than red. Additional regional saints throughout the calendar further reinforce a devotional geography centered in the Loire region rather than in Paris alone. Most notable, however, is the entry on 8 May, written in French as "la feste d'Orléans," commemorating the liberation of Orléans in 1429 during the campaigns of Joan of Arc. Research into the calendrical surveys of Victor Leroquais has revealed that this rare feast also appears in a documented Book of Hours identified as "à l'usage d'Orléans," confirming that the observance formed part of the devotional culture of the Orléans region during the fifteenth century. Unfortunately, the parent manuscript itself is no longer known, and only the calendar survives. The absence of the Hours of the Virgin, the Litany of Saints, and the Office of the Dead — the sections most critical for determining the precise liturgical use of a Book of Hours — prevents a definitive localization of the manuscript. Nevertheless, the calendar preserves unusually strong regional indicators, combining Parisian structure with clear Orléans and Bourges affiliations, offering rare insight into the devotional landscape of fifteenth-century central France. To illustrate the Indian caste system, the anonymous author tells lively anecdotes and makes compariso…ns with French social classes and parallels to biblical stories. The author not only describes the details of the four castes (Brahmin, Raj, Vaisya and Sudra) including their hierarchy and advantages, the purpose of this social structure and the experience of those who lose their caste. He goes further speculates about the way different cultures criticize each other's morals. He argues that all nations criticize each other in some way, simply because the habits of cultures differ, each with its own good reasons. He also wrote about the extent of superstition in the customs of Indian people, for example the beliefs surrounding cows. He concludes that not all their customs are superstitious. Once part of the dictionary collection of Thomas Malin Rodgers, Jr. Descriptions of homonyms were published in books on French grammar since the 17th-century. The issue of disambiguation in the field of semantics, or the so-called "qualified ambivalences," were appointed within this body of knowledge and refined over several years of lexicology study. The first dictionary of homonyms of the French language was the Dictionnaire des mots homonymes de la langue françoise (1775) by Pierre Thomas Nicolas Hurtaut and published in Paris. By the title of this manuscript we can surmise that this manuscript quotes a number of key examples from his publication. This handwritten exercise and the resulting grammar book would have been destined for students in secondary education who at the time were learning the semantics of speech in their native tongue and learning how to write them correctly, as homonyms can be quite confusing. Some common French homonyms with the largest variance of meaning are and eau, au, aux, haut, os, ô (pp. 65-67) and ver, verre, vers, vert, vair (pp. 224-225). The ambiguity of such words was tackled by classifying them into word collections and alphabetical lists, all echoed in this careful undertaking. This manuscript dates to a time when there was a distinct emergence of European linguistic terminology and great interest in collecting such recorded knowledge.

A collection of 27 and 26 short contredances mostly in 6/8 time for violin, partly with fingering, and two additional songs on the final pages, one of which is attributed to the Belgian composer Joseph Henri Mees (1777-1855). The song "L'Amour et les Grâces" was… published in Rouen in the early 19th century as a "Romance" with guitar accompaniment (BNF, VM 28-1221). It might point back to an older version of the same song by the Italian composer Iacopo Gotifredo Ferrari, published among "Six nouvelles romances avec accompagnement de forte-piano" in Paris between 1785 and 1793. The lyrics by Abbé Garon are noted separately with three stanzas underneath the music and the final two stanzas inserted between the 18th and 19th contredanse of the second collection. It remains unclear whether the two collections of contredanses can be attributed to Mees. The 10th contredanse of the second collection in 2/4 time, entitled "La flute enchantée", is based on Tamino's aria "Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja" from Mozart's The Magic Flute, which had premiered in 1791. The first Paris production of an adapted version of the opera took place in 1801 (year X of the French revolutionary calendar). - Two hands can be distinguished, the second on the last 4 leaves on partly different paper, which might point to repairs. The original handwritten title was torn off the wrapper. 3 staves partly or fully pasted for corrections. With waterstains on the cover, browning and minor tears. Some ink corrosion; binding loose.

Feast days in alternating blue and burnished gold script, two-line "KL" initials painted blue with white tracery and embellished with orange and blue ivy on a burnished gold ground, each with a spray of gilt leaves and painted flowers, one-…line "A" initials in burnished gold over a pink and blue ground, each page with a panel border of colorful flowers, berries, and acanthus over a painted gold ground, with 24 SMALL MINIATURES, depicting the labor of the month on rectos and zodiacal signs on versos. Some moderate smudging and soiling in bottom and fore margins, January and February with tiny wormhole in head margin, the miniature for January conceivably improved by a later hand, but, all in all, a very lovely Calendar, the high-quality paintings very well preserved, and the whole with vibrant colors and brightly gleaming gold. Vibrantly illustrated and shimmering with gold, this is an excellent example of a complete Calendar that would have appeared at the beginning of a luxuriously appointed Book of Hours. Each month is illustrated with the labor (or occupation) appropriate for the moment. These are, in turn: warming by the fire, feasting, pruning, picking flowers, courting, threshing hay, harvesting wheat, baking bread, treading grapes, sowing, feeding hogs, and slaughtering a hog. Our artist chose to compose these scenes more as portraits than depictions of actual tasks, framing the image around each figure's face and sometimes only including small details that might indicate their occupation. In the month of June, for example, which depicts threshing hay, we see only a sliver of the farmer's sickle, and nothing at all of the hay. Instead, the farmer himself is the primary focus here: and he is particularly well-executed, with gentle shading on his downcast features, careful brushstrokes highlighting the gleam of his hair, and brushed gold suggesting the sun beating down on a bright June day. In addition to the labor or occupation of the month on the recto, the 12 signs of the zodiac are depicted on the verso of each leaf, these executed with equal charm and care. In cheerful bright colors, our artist has depicted Leo's preening pose and glimmering mane, the drama of Sagittarius' drawn bow, and the cherubic plumpness of Aquarius, molded in bluish shadows. In addition to the aesthetic achievements of its various parts, the whole is desirable as a so-called composite Calendar, with the name of a saint (or special celebration) occupying every day of the year. The origin of the composite Calendar is uncertain, but the general opinion is that it was formalized in the early 14th century. The Parisian Hours of Jeanne d'Evreaux, copied in ca. 1330, has been put forth as an early example. In any case, the Calendar was subject to numerous changes in the course of time, as various saints were canonized and supplanted those who, while still recognized as saintly, were deemed to be less favored residents for a particular calendar date. The saints' days on this Calendar are fairly typical for the Use of Paris, and given the high-quality illumination, liberal use of gold, and robust borders, it is likely that the parent manuscript was produced by an accomplished atelier in that city. Although single Calendar leaves regularly come on the market, complete Calendars--particularly ones with extensive visual programs, as here--are much more difficult to acquire.

Minor soiling to vellum, miniature with light chipping in a couple places, one corner clipped (not touching decoration), but a very well-preserved leaf in excellent condition overall. This charming little miniature is an intimate portrait of St. Mark writing his Gospel, accompanied, as usua by his attribute, the lion, standing at his side. St. Mark's facial features here are excellent, with molding and shading that produce convincing three dimensionality and emotional resonance. The leaf contains another especially delightful detail: a small monkey perched in the border, eating grapes from a nearby vine. Modern commentators are generally unsure why such whimsical additions appear so inappropriately in Medieval manuscripts which feature sober spiritual content. But we can say with some certainty that monkeys were often used to suggest improper behavior, foolishness, and even the devil. In the present case, the monkey could be seen as Mark's foil: whereas the saint is depicted as a model of industry and conviction, the monkey puts earthly appetite above the sober production exemplified by the Evangelist.

Minor soiling to vellum, but in excellent condition, the miniature especially well preserved. This especially intimate and tender scene shows the so-called Virgo Lactans (or Nursing Madonna), the Virgin suckling the infant Christ; it accompanies the text for "Obsecro te," a popular Marian prayer appealing to the Virgin for protection and intercession. The prayer is not always accompanied by a miniature, and the present illustration, being rather large and skillfully done, is a particularly appealing example. The Virgin's facial features are especially excellent, with beautiful molding and shading that give her visage deep complexity and emotional resonance. The use of gold in this miniature adds to its richness; delicately highlighted garments, tresses, and angel wings catch the light and seem to shimmer as one moves the page. The high-quality illumination, liberal use of gold, and robust borders all suggest that the original manuscript must have been the product of an accomplished workshop.

Slight soiling to vellum, but a very well-preserved leaf in fine condition. From what was surely a costly Book of Hours, this leaf features a charming and skillfully painted miniature of the Annunciation to the Shepherds, attributable to the workshop of Jean Pichore (fl. ca. 1502-20), a major figure among illuminators of the period and one of the most sought-after artists in France at the turn of the 16th century. Depicting the traditional subject associated with the hour of Terce, our miniature portrays, as usual, an angel appearing to shepherds tending their flock, bringing news of the birth of Christ. Although the biblical narrative suggests that the shepherds were startled by the angel's appearance, the three figures in this miniature appear remarkably unmoved--in fact, only one of them seems to take any notice at all. The first shepherd sits on the ground, looking straight ahead; the second holds his hands in prayer but looks little more than, well, prayerful at the angel in the sky; and a third figure maintains a slightly aloof expression, taking no particular interest in the unfolding miraculous event. What may seem to be indifference can be explained easily enough by the artist's successful portrayal of nighttime cold! All three shepherds are thickly dressed, one with his arms pressed tightly against his chest, another with a hood partly covering his face, and the sheep are tightly huddled together into one woolly white cluster. Another manifestation of the artist's success here is seen in the particularly well done molding of the faces, with subtle shading, attractively rendered features, and clear individuation. Moreover, although the shepherds seem essentially unmoved, their garments are dusted with a glistening gold radiance from above, a further subtle touch revealing a high level of achievement on the part of the painter. Finally, the borders are one last source of delight, with a small bird shown in mid-flight, and a second one investigating a single strawberry that seems to have been placed there just for him. All of these indications of sophistication suggest that the original manuscript must have been commissioned by a patron able to pay a premium for the work of a highly skilled atelier.

The subjects of the large miniatures include: the Mass of St. Gregory (f. 1r); Annunciation (f. 33r); Visitation (f. 57r); Nativity (f. 70r); Adoration of the Magi (f. 80v); Crowning of the Virgin (f. 94v); David in Prayer (f. 100r); Pentecost (f. 123r); and a rectangular miniature of the Holy Wound (or perhaps the Bleeding Host of Dijon) (f. 241v). Isolated light rubbing and negligible chips to miniatures, the dark blue paint appearing slightly worn in places (as is often the case), occasional faint smudges to borders and other imperfections, but all of these trivial. IN THOROUGHLY FINE CONDITION INTERNALLY--the paint fresh, the vellum clean, and the margins quite comfortable--AND THE EXTRAORDINARILY FINE BINDING FLAWLESS. In a spectacular 19th century binding, this lovely, thick little Book of Hours was executed by a talented follower of Ma?tre Fran?ois and the Master of Jean Rolin, and contains a large number of prayers and devotional texts, many of them in French. The manuscript includes a fine array of large and small miniatures executed with a colorful palette and careful attention to detail. Particularly noteworthy.
