Pollard. was concerned, like Morison, to discover the 'original sources on which the scientific study of type design must be based,' and collections of type specimens were a major part of these sources. Published catalogues were indispensable to the typographical historian. The practical application of Pollard's theory was seen to startling effect in his use of evidence derived from type specimens to convict the forgeries of nineteenth-century pamphlets perpetrated by Thomas James Wise".
