Prof. von Troltsch was a pioneer of modern otology, and made important improvements in the study and treatment of the ear. "The surgical diseases of the ear" offers an overview of his work and his new methods of treatment. Prof. von Helmholtz made significant contributions in several scientific fields, and was a pioneer in the scientific study of human vision and audition. He was very interested in the physics of perception, and his work remains influential. "The mechanism of the ossicles of the ear and membrana tympani" is one of the first of his works to be translated into English.
