Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Two rock clusters beside the track to the Mitchell Plateau in the northern Kimberley region of Western Australia contain a wealth of Aboriginal paintings, providing many visitors with their first glimpse of Kimberley Aboriginal rock art. Located on the western side of the King Edward River, the area - known as Munurru - lies within Wunambal country. Paintings at Munurru span thousands of years, with depictions of plants from the earliest Archaic Period, people dressed up for ceremony (Tasselled Figures, Bent Knee Figures and Straight Part Figures), thylacines (Tasmanian tigers, extinct on mainland Australia for 3,000 years) from the Painted Hand Period, and three panels of brightly coloured Wandjina, the god-like ancestors who bring each wet season's rains. Munurru contains the most visited painting sites in the Kimberley, and this book should assist with an understanding and appreciation of this early Australian art. The Australian Aboriginal, written in 1925, describes the ceremonial and day to day lives of traditional Aboriginal people, as witnessed by Herbert Basedow, who from 1903 travelled the most remote areas of Australia. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

"When in 1997 the Bringing Them Home Report about the forcible removal of part-Aboriginal children from their parents was published, many Australians felt stunned and ashamed. What was such a brutal policy of biological engineering meant to achieve, and who were the men behind it? One of them was Dr Herbert Basedow 1881â"1933 from Adelaide, a geologist, medical doctor, M.P., and anthropologist. He unwittingly provided the administrators of the White Australia policy with a bloodless method of 'breeding out the colour', of biologically absorbing Aborigines into the white-settler society. His studies in Germany had convinced him that Aborigines were the racial ancestors of Europeans, that they were black Caucasians, and therefore Aboriginal features disappeared for good after three or four generations of intermarriage with Europeans. Dr Basedow was a scientist and he never intended to harm countless Aboriginal families. On the contrary, he dedicated much of his short life to extending their future. But the removal of children did not stop in 1953 when the structure of DNA was discovered and rendered Basedow's findings of 1910 untenable. It only ended with the White Australia policy itself." Publisher's commentary.
