They lived in large towns and villages, built monumental mounds and earthworks, enjoyed rich religious and artistic achievements, and maintained a flourishing economy based on agriculture and complemented by time-honored hunting and gathering techniques. Yet they have remained relatively unknown to most scholars and laymen, in part because of a lack of collaboration between historians and anthropologists. Four Centuries of Southern Indians is a collection of nine essays which allow both historians and anthropologists to make their necessary contributions to a fuller understanding of the southern Indians. The essays span four hundred years, beginning with French and Spanish relations with the Timucuan Indians in northern Florida in the sixteenth century and ending with the modern Cherokees transported to Oklahoma. The interim topics include the social structure of the Tuscaroras of North Carolina in the eighteenth century, the role southern Indians played in the American Revolution, the removal of the southern Indians to the Indian Territory, and Cherokee beliefs about sorcery and witchcraft. This collection of essays and the cooperation between historians and anthropologists which it incorporates signify the beginning of what will undoubtedly prove a fruitful approach to the study of southern Indians. ; A very successful collection of important papers . . . Holmes, Richard Rivington [Sir Richard Rivington Holmes, KCVO (16 November 1835 - 22 March 1911) was a British archivist, courtier and librarian to the Queen]. The Plates Printed in facsimile by William Griggs (1832-1911) Chromo-Lithographer to Her Majesty the Queen. [Arthur James Balfour, 1st Earl of Balfour, KG, OM, PC, FRS, FBA, DL (25 July 1848 - 19 March 1930) was a British statesman and Conservative Party politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1902 to 1905].

A gorgeous example of the co…lour printing skills of William Griggs with a full colour illuminated dedication page, frontispiece of The Royal Library, Windsor Castle, 21 pages of text with different colour illuminated chromolithographed borders followed by 152 full-page chromolithographic illustrated bindings. Tipped to the top of the front free end paper is a hand written letter on Windsor Castle headed note paper from the author concerning the publication of this volume dated 2nd November 1889, some three years before it went to press, SIGNED by the author 'R. Holmes'. From Lord Balfour's private library with pencil note to this effect inside the rear end paper. Neatly repaired tear across the top quarter of the spine, contents without any foxing in very near Fine condition.
