Green half-leather, worn, one menu per day per page for most days between 22 Sept.1882 and 6 Jan. 1884. A bookplate is the only clue to the family the volume belonged to, the coat of arms and motto ("Loyaulté n a honte") of the Dukes of Newcastle-under-Lyme, specifically at this time (1880s) Henry Pelham-Clinton, 7th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (1864-1928) whose family seat was Clumber House, nr. Worksop, Notts (restored after a fire in 1879; presumably the home of this volume). The menus are usually written on a basic template of printed headings (on alternate pages, rectos) as follows: DINING ROOM [Potages \ Poissons | Entrées | Relevés | Rôts | Légumes | Entremets | Relevés] | LUNCHEON | SERVANTS HALL | BREAKFAST. Many of the blank versos have full or specific, special menus (e.g. "Diner de M. Forbes" and others - circa eight), but as the book is used up the blanks get fully used in date sequence, thiough several are a day out of sequence (MS.17th preceding template 16th). Dishes are usually expressed in French (exceptions being Scotch Broth, Plum Pudding & Brandy and Mince Pies for Christmas). Breakfast is detailed the least. The heading is usually "Menu de [22 September etc]", "Breakfast" only occasionally filled in, frequent pencilled additions and changes. Only the stub survives of the page for 26 Février 1883. Most of the text is in the same hand, Chef, Butler (?) and the menu for the day was presumably displayed.…

This copy includes a letter from First Lady Hillary Clinton, on White House stationery, inviting the author to "visit your former haunts," with an offer from Mrs. Clinton to host the tour. Mrs. Somerville accepted the offer. It was her first time back since she left the Roosevelt administration in 1941. (Washington Post, 2009). Letter reads: "August 7, 1995 / Dear Ms. Somerville: How kind of you to write and share with me some of your memories and experiences at the White House when Mrs. Roosevelt was First Lady. Although never privileged to meet her, of course, I do feel I have come "know" her by extensively reading about her - through writings of others as well as her own. I have begun writing my column with an eagerness and enthusiasm to communicate with people all across our great nation. Clinton, Bill. Presidential presentation frame dating from his 1993 to 2001 administration, documenting the material culture of White House gift giving and the ceremonial exchange of presidential objects with political associates, visitors, and other recipients. Bearing both the presidential seal and Clinton's facsimile signature, the frame offers tangible evidence of how presidential identity and executive symbolism were incorporated into official presentation objects during the final decade of the twentieth century. Polished silver picture frame measuring approximately 7 by 9 inches, with an opening measuring approximately 4 by 6 inches. The upper border is engraved with the Seal of the President of the United States, while the lower border bears an engraved facsimile of Bill Clinton's signature. Substantial in weight and designed for tabletop display, the frame was produced as a presidential presentation gift; no documentation identifying its original recipient accompanies the object. Presidential presentation pieces occupy a distinct place within White House material culture, combining functional design with emblems of executive authority and personal association.
