Presumed first edition (not stated but per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). [4], 1-204, 1-4 pages. Hardcover: H 18cm x L 12.25cm. Contemporary green cloth rubbed with some soiling/staining; some cloth loss at frayed spine ends; board corners bumped and worn; some loss to spine's gilt stamping but title lettering "Bill Arp" remains reasonably bright as does front board's gilt lettered Bill Arp quote "I'm a good Union man . . ." Front free endpaper removed; "Bill Arp" written in pencil on front pastedown but does not match any examples of the author's handwriting; mostly erased colored pencil scribbling on rear flyleaf; toning/foxing prevalent throughout with some soiling/staining and a few edge tears/nicks to leaves; some colored pencil embellishments to several of the book's unpaged b/w plates; pencil markings/notes on pages 159, 163, 175, and 194 and other occurrences might be found upon a more careful perusal. Mild stress to front and rear hinges but text block remains firm. Book retains author's b/w frontispiece portrait with facsimile signature (but missing interlaying tissue guard sheet) opposite pictorial title page immediately followed by text title/copyright leaf. Interspersed amongst text are fifteen b/w plates illustrated by M.A. Sullivan all on unpaged leaves including an image of General Nathan Bedford Forrest opposite page 40 (note the aforementioned embellishments to these plates). Four page publisher's prospectus at rear. Uncommon first book by southern humorist Charles Henry Smith (1826-1903) who, of course, wrote under the pseudonym of Bill Arp. This book was published when Smith was just forty years old and before he had reached his journalistic zenith at the Atlanta Constitution where his immensely popular weekly column titled "The Country Philosopher" ran for twenty-five years from 1878 to 1903 and was syndicated to numerous newspapers throughout the South.
