Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. A celebration of the exceptional collection of Renaissance art assembled by Edmond Foulc and its purchase by the Philadelphia Museum of Art In 1930, the Philadelphia Museum of Art acquired the collection of medieval and Renaissance sculpture and decorative arts assembled by Edmond Foulc (1828?1916). Foulc?s beautiful Paris residence was an important gathering place for like-minded art enthusiasts and collectors such as Frédéric Spitzer, Alexander Basilewsky, and Émile Gavet, and this book explores his collecting practice in context as well as the museum?s efforts to secure these treasures for its new building. An extended essay on the collection?s highlights includes discussions of famous works such as the choir screen from the Château de Pagny, an enamel triptych by the Master of the Large Foreheads, the Virgin and Child by Desiderio da Settignano, and Adoration of the Christ Child by Luca della Robbia, in addition to magnificent examples of cutlery, metalwork, and  furniture.Distributed for the Philadelphia Museum of Art.…

Softcover. Zustand: New; shrink-wrapped. Glossy, color-illus. grey wraps with white lettering. 60 pp. with numerous illustrations. Beautiful and eminently useful, stonewares produced in the German-speaking lands from the Middle Ages onward were highly valued for their durability and suitability for a range of domestic and social uses. Widely traded throughout Europe, they were also among the first European ceramics to reach colonial North America. During the Renaissance the addition of brilliant salt glazess well as relief imagery that communicated with the userraised the status of these wares. Later examples introduced abstract floral or geometric decorations and more unusual, original forms, which retained broad cultural significance. About ninety fine stoneware pieces from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and a promised private collection testify here to the success, artful decoration, and fascinating variety of this medium. Jack Hinton describes the developments in stoneware through these notable examples, and beautiful color images bring their details vividly to life. - from the PMA web site.…

Benjamin Franklin caused a sensation when he arrived in Paris in December 1776 seeking support for America's struggle for independence: nobles vied to entertain him, and artists scrambled to portray him. Soft cover. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. 1st. Published to mark 50 years since US forces were based in NZ (June 1942 to October 1944) this booklet had the basic aim of establishing the location of US camps, bases, stores and other military establishments in NZ during the Pacific War. It was produced at a time when groups of American veterans were visiting NZ to recall their experiences there. The US Veterans of Foreign Wars organisation estimated that more that 500,000 Americans saw service in NZ, including mebers of three Marine divisions and two Army divisions. "In addition, many US Navy --- among them 12 Seabee battalions --- units and ships were there," the VFW said. The 80 page booklet lists, with plans and photos, camps set up in North Auckland, Auckland, South Auckland, Kapiti Coast, Masterton and the Wellington area. Nineteen hoptitals and associated facilities were established, mainly in the Auckland region, and a number of major storage sites, airfields and naval facilities. A large number of US transport ships docked in Auckland or Wellington, carrying "hundreds of thousands of tons of war materials." In addtion to the plans and photos of camps and installations, the booklet contains lists of US Marine and Army units arriving in NZ, photographs of a number of memorials at former camp sites and commemorative messages. (This year, 2012, marks the 70th anniversary of the US "invasion" of NZ). First edition of 1992, 80 pages, illustrated throughout with plans and photos.
