It argues that the story was as much an American creation as a British one. American journalist Lowell Thomas first brought Lawrence?s story to public attention through war travelogues presented in New York City, which later reached England. American literary interest continued to sustain the legend, followed by its representation in a Hollywood film. By the 1960s, the story had developed into a small commercial industry.The volume challenges earlier conclusions about the relationship between Lawrence and Thomas, presenting it as closer than Lawrence?s biographers had generally acknowledged. It also traces the extent of American involvement in constructing and spreading the legend. Unpublished or rare photographs, manuscript material, business letters and supporting documents are used to reconstruct the origins of this transatlantic popular story. (SP).…

Although not recognized as such, the Lawrence legend was as much an American product as a British one. American journalist Lowell Thomas first publicized the story through war travelogues given in New York City, which soon found their way to England. The legend was perpetuated by American literary interest in Lawrence and then by a Hollywood film. By the 1960s, the Lawrence of Arabia story had become a small commercial industry.The volume challenges conclusions about the relationship between Lawrence and Lowell Thomas, demonstrating it was much closer than Lawrence biographers have previously thought or were willing to admit.
