The jacket (now in a protective sleeve) is unclipped (3s 6d net) and typical of the war time period with paper shortages, the wrapper has been printed on re-used paper with a differe…nt title on the verso which is rather charming. Touches of edge wear, darkened to the margins and spine, couple of small stains. A nice copy of this sonnet sequence by Pudney with full-page b/w illustrations by Nash. Tidy ownership name to front free endpaper otherwise no blemishes. Pudney [1909-1977] was an author and journalist but with his poetry found his voice, especially during the war as he captured the effect of conflict on ordinary people's lives. The sonnet sequence follows the calendar year and the changing seasons, beautifully complemented by Nash's illustrations. John Nash [1893-1977] was the brother of the artist Paul Nash.

Born in Canterbury, he attended the King's School. The Elegies here reprinted probably represent his earliest known writings.

Herbert Ernest BATES (1905 - 1974) was a prolific British author best known for his stories describing life in the rural Midlands of England, notably his native Northamptonshire.
