Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Philosopher, novelist, essayist, eccentric, no other Czech author has had a greater impact on underground culture than Ladislav Klima (1878-1928). Mentor to artists as varied as Bohumil Hrabal and the Plastic People of the Universe, Klima's philosophy was radically subjectivist, and he felt it should be lived rather than merely spoken or written about. With Nietzsche as his paragon, he embarked upon a lifelong pursuit to become God, or Absolute Will, elucidating this quest in many letters, aphorisms, and essays. Yet among Klima's fictional texts, the apotheosis of his philosophy is The Sufferings of Prince Sternenhoch, his most acclaimed novel. Ostensibly a series of journal entries, the tale chronicles the descent into madness of Prince Sternenhoch, the German Empire's foremost aristocrat and favorite of Kaiser "Willy." Having become the "lowliest worm" at the hands of his estranged wife, Helga, the Queen of Hells, Sternenhoch eventually attains an ultimate state of bliss and salvation through the most grotesque perversions. Klima explores here the paradoxical nature of pure spirituality with a humor that is as darkly comical as it is obscene. This volume also includes his notorious text "My Autobiography." In a series of journal entries, the novel chronicles the descent into madness of Prince Sternenhoch, who, having become the "lowliest worm" at the hands of his deceased wife Helga, the Queen of Hells, eventually attains an ultimate state of bliss and salvation through the most grotesque form of perversion. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Visions & Apparitions brings together in English for the first time the greater part of Ladislav Klima's ghost stories. Klima employed the horror genre as a way to explore his subjectivist philosophy, and by all accounts he enjoyed writing them to pass the time. At times playful and lyrical, if not outright comical, the stories were written at various stages, with the final text, ostensibly about a vampire, dictated from his hospital bed just months before his death. As a whole, they reflect Klima's lifelong preoccupation with the nature of "reality" as a product of one's mind and a matrix of madness, hallucination, and dream permeated with all-too-real phantoms and ghouls, which, akin to Poe, have sprung from the unconscious or emerged through the power of imagination and desire, materializing as more than mere figment. Collected here for the first time in English, Visions & Apparitions represents the greater part of Klima's output of ghost stories. Klima employed the horror genre as a way to explore his subjectivist philosophy that sees reality as a matrix of madness, hallucination, and dream. Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Klima's intense inner life and complex mental state is reflected in his peculiar writings. The eccentricity of style and occasional violence found in his prose were intended to convey the deep conflicts attending his thought processes, and this is perhaps best exemplified in the novella Glorious Nemesis. Set in the Tyrol (inspired by Klima's extended stay in Landeck), it is a balladic tale that explores the metaphysics of love and death. Sider, a man of twenty-eight, is confronted by a giant mountain named Deer's Head and an ancient, single-story house standing at the end of a small lane under a high, black cliff. Out one day on a hike, he encounters two women who will mark his fate: the elder Errata and the younger Orea, dressed in blue. From this point on Sider is on a quest for the All, for absolute Desire, and to connect with eternity. Willing to risk his entire fortune and sanity, he succumbs to his dreams and hallucinations as Orea, or her doppelganger, becomes for him the manifestation of Jungian anima. In homage to the goddess Nemesis, Sider becomes initiated into the mysteries of life and death. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
