A principle expounded in common by all is that of the utilization of the special skillful means (upaya-kaushalya) of Vajrayana to transmute afflictive emotions (klesha), especially desire (kama), into Great Bliss (mahasukha) and enlightenment (bodhi). This principle has been called Kama-Siddhi, the "Perfection of Desire" in the Cakrasamvaratantra and cited in Anangayogi's Dakinijalasamvararahasya, the first treatise translated in this volume. The dates of composition range from the 2nd-to 8th centuries CE. Their authors, Anangayogi (Anangavajra?), Aryadeva and Shantarakshita were scholar-adepts of the latest phase of Buddhism in India which recognized the Three Vehicle (Tri-yana) schema of Sravakayana (Disciple Vehicle), Paramitayana-Mahayana (Perfection Great Vehicle) and Mantra-Mahayana/Vajrayana (Mantra Great Vehicle/Adamantine Vehicle). If the author of our first treatise "Mystery of the Concealed Essence of the Network of Dakinis (Dakinijalasamvararahasyam) is identical with Anangavajra, author of the Accomplishment of Determination Wisdom and Means (Prajnopapayaviniscayasiddhi), the treatise must have been composed in the early 8th cent. CE as he is recognized as the being the second in the lineage of the 84 Great Adepts (mahasiddhas) of Vajrayana who flourished from the 8th-12th centuries. Unlike the two other treatises translated herein, the "Dakinijalasamvararahasyam" does not offer logical-epistemological defenses of the Tantric principles but resorts to the analogical type "proofs" found in the Root Tantras (mulatantras) such as the Hevajra and Cakrasamvara. It excels, however, in decoding terms of the Tantric code language (sandhyabhasa), a feature that should be of great interest to students of the Vajrayana. Its most important feature, moreover, is the significance of its title Dakinijalasamvararahasyam, rendered "Mystery of the Concealed Essence of the Network of Dakinis". In the introduction, I have devoted great effort to decoding its meaning. The next composition, "Treatise on the Purification of the Mind" (Cittavisuddhiprakarana) is ascribed to Aryadeva, the direct disciple of the illustrious Dialectician and Madhyamaka philosopher Nagarjuna, himself reputed to have been a great adept of Vajrayana and author of Tantric treatises such as the Five Stages (Pancakrama), a systematic exposition of the yogas of the Guhyasamajatantra, the first of the Anuttarayoga class of Tantras. To Aryadeva is also attributed the authorship of a number of expository treatises on the Guhyasamaja Tantra, chief of which is the Caryamelakapradipa, "The Lamp of the Integration of Practice", an in-depth exposition of the yogas of the Guhyasamajatantra. Both the Cittavisuddhiprakarana and the Caryamelakapradipa are much esteemed and cited. A significant feature of Aryadeva's Cittavisuddhiprakarana is its employment of more rigorous logical proofs of the Tantric principles. Its composition can be dated to the 2nd century. Our last treatise, The Proof of the True Principle (Tattvasiddhi) is ascribed to the illustrious Shantarakshita, author of the magisterial Tattvasamgraha, "Compendium of True Principles", who, in conjunction with Padmasambhava, was instrumental in laying the foundations of Buddhism in Tibet. Its composition can be assigned to the 8th cent. If Aryadeva's treatise can be said to begin the trend of proffering logico-epistemological rationalizations of the principle of Kama-Siddhi, Shatarakshita's Tattvasiddhi is the culmination in this direction. Its proofs are as rigorous as those offered in his magnum opus the Tattvasamgraha. In addition, its exploration of psychodynamics is extraordinary. The Introduction explores select themes such as Kama-Siddhi in depth and analyses ke Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

The title, THE PROGRESS IN MEDITATION: THE THREE BHAVANAKRAMAS OF KAMALASILA refers to the Sanskrit tile BHAVANAKRAMA composed in Tibet between the years 792-794 CE on the occasion of the the so-called bSam Yas debate or the Council of Lhasa which featured the historic encounter between the Indian Buddhist scholar Kamalasila and the Chinese Chan monk Hva Shang Mahayana. The completed translation of the three Bhavanakramas of Kamalasila represents for me the grateful fulfillment of a task originally undertaken over 40 years ago when I first encountered Prof. Giuseppe Tucci's editions of the trilogy. In my peregrinations and vicissitudes over these years, I have actually lost three earlier translations but so committed have I been to getting a complete translation done that I began anew over three years ago with a determined effort to get the task done in a reasonable time-frame. Thanks to my experience with the earlier (lost) completed translations, my latest attempt was much obviated. I am pleased to present to interested readers these most celebrated treatises on Buddhist meditation according to the standpoint of the hybrid Yogacara-Svatantrika Madhyamaka school represented by Santarakita and Kamalasila. My Introduction does not cover all important topics in the trilogy but focuses primarily on some topics of polemical significance such as gradual versus instantaneous enlightenment (kramika vs. yugapat bodhi) 'discriminating wisdom and skillful-means' (prajnopaya), the importance of the balanced practice of tranquility and insight (samatha-vipasyana-yuganaddha) and the proper role of mindfulness and attention (smti-manasikara) in the practice of samadhi (samadhi-bhavana). The headings in square brackets are not part of the original texts (Sanskrit or Tibetan) but were deemed necessary to delineate the various topics. The Bhavanakrama-s of Kamalasila are of particularly foundational importance in the history of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism and more generally to Buddhist soteriology in the matter of the sudden-gradualist controversy concerning enlightenment (bodhi), an issue which figures greatly in some Mahayana schools, both exoteric (Sutra-based) and esoteric (Tantra-based). From a modernist perspective, the trilogy may be characterized as partly religious and partly philosophical: it has the pervasive tone of Buddhist piety in its extolment of the bodhisattva-practice involving the Six (or Ten) Perfections (paramita) and Ten Stages (bhumi) as found in the Mahayana Discourses (Sutras) and Expository Treatises (Sastras), amply quoted in the trilogy, but its rigorous arguments and polemics are entirely consistent with the author's commentary (Panjika) to his teacher Santarakita's Compendium of Philosophical Tenets (Tattvasagraha). The logical arguments of the Bhavanakramas (BKs) are also entirely consistent with those found in his Madhyamakaloka. The Bhavanakrama-s can be classed with the Bodhisattvabhumi, Bodhicittopada-Sutrasastra and the Bodhicaryavatara. In an even wider comparison, it is comparable in part to the Buddhaghosa's Visuddhimagga in exposition of the theme of the integration of tranquility and insight (samatha-vipasyana-yuganaddha) and the Tian Ta'i patriarch Chi-I's monumental The Great Calming and Contemplation (Mo ho chih kuan), devoted entirely to the subject of samatha-vipasyana.Translated from the original Sanskrit with footnotes and appendices of the Sanskrit texts in Devanagari and Roman, this present translation is only the second complete translation from Sanskrit. The other pioneering translation by Paramananda Sharma (Aditya Prakashan, Delhi 1997, 2004)) from the Sanskrit is entirely welcome but the scholarship in this area requires the more complete treatment t Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Although the date of composition is uncertain, from internal evidence it appears was that it was likely composed sometime between the 16th-18th centuries C.E. This classic, circulated for centuries among a small circle of yogis, is both an encyclopedia and practice manual of yoga. While topics covered range from Hatha to Kundalini Yoga, its underlying orientation is Tantric. The author Aghoranandanatha, a Siddha Yogi in the tradition of the renowned Mahasiddhas such as Gorakshanath, professed to have attained Nirvana upon the completion of the treatise. The presentation of the spectrum of yogas in the Yogakarnika is comprehensive of the entire field of yoga and is addressed to serious practitioners. The text impresses the reader throughout with the astonishing range of doctrines and practices expounded as well as the tone of confidence in the efficacy of the practices described. Practitioners and aficianados of yoga alike will both benefit from reading the Yogarnika. It is a significant addition to a sub-genre of yoga literature in the class of the Hathayogapradipika and Gheranda Samhita available in translation. The Yogakarnika is quintessentially a treatise of yoga for serious yoga practitioners and those who aspire to serious practice. This item is printed on demand. This title, The Two Bhavanakramas of Vimalamitra is intended as a companion volume to my Progress in Meditation: The Three Bhavanakramas of Kamalashila (Amazon 2020). The Progress in Meditation: The Three Bhavanakramas of Kamalashila, is a translation from Sanskrit (with reference to the Tibetan) of the Indian scholar Kamalshila's three treatises on the path of gradual practice of meditation (bhavanakrama) for achieving enlightenment (bodhi). Composed in Tibet at the behest of the Tibetan king Khri srong lde bstan following the Great Debate (or Council of Lhasa) convened at the monastery of Samye between the years 792-794 CE, the method of Gradualism (krama-praveshika) advocated in Kamalashila's Bhavanakrama trilogy was adjudged the officially approved method to be practiced in Tibet over the rival position of Sumultaneism or Instantaneity (yugapat-praveshika) championed by the Chinese Cha'an patriarch Hwa Shang Mahayana' and his followers. Vimalamitra, another prominent Indian scholar of this period, a contemporary of Kamalashila, invited like Kamalashila and his teacher Shantarakshita to firmly establish Buddhist in Tibet in the late 8th century CE, was the author of two treatises also called Bhavanakramas, one devoted to the method of Gradualism (krama-praveshika/rim gyis pa) and the other to the method of Simultaneism or Instantaneousness ( yugapat-praveshika). The present volume is a translation from the Tibetan (of the presumably lost Sanskrit originals) of Vimalamitra's "Kramapraveshikabhavanartha" The Meaning of the Gradual Entrance into Meditative Cultivation" (Tib. Rim gyis 'jug pa'i bsgom don) and "Nirvikalpapraveshikabhavanartha" The Meaning of the Non-Conceptual Entrance into Meditative Cultivation (Tib. Mi rtog pa'i bsgom don). These first of these two treatises describe the gradualist method of approach to meditation and enlightenment, while the second is devoted to exposition and advocacy of the Simultaneous (or Instantaneous) approach. Though both approaches have been taught in Buddhism from the outset, there are a number of points of controversy concerning them which have been the source of debate and rivalry, primarily in China and Tibet. The extensive Introduction explores in-depth both historical and doctrinal issues involved in these two approaches, debated by scholars and practitioners up to the present. The Tibetan texts of the two treatises are given the Appendices. The "Five Stages" (Pancakrama) and "Condensed Stage" (Pindikrama) translated herein are renowned in Indo-Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism as two of most fundamental Tantric works of the illustrious philosopher-sage Arya Nagarjuna (2nd Cent.CE). Author of many treatises of a rigorous dialectical logic known as "consequentialism" (prasanga), Nagarjuna is esteemed as "second Buddha" for his exposition of Buddhist doctrines, exoteric and esoteric. The treatises herein translated from the original Sanskrit (with reference to Tibetan versions), are expository works on the fourth and highest division of Buddhist Tantra, the Peerless class, known as Anuttarayoga Tantra. Devoted to the exposition of the Peerless Yoga Tantra class generally, the "Five Stages" and "Condensed Stage" are more specifically expository treatises on the "Secret Assembly Tantra" (Guhyasamaja Tantra), widely regarded as the prototypical Tantra of the Anuttara-class. The "Five Stages" lays out the Path-conception derived from the aforesaid "Guhysamaja Tantra", while the "Condensed Stage" is the practice-manual (sadhana) connected with that Tantra. The translation of both treatises, written in verse (slokas), are accompanied by the prose commentary, the "Panchakramatippani" of Parahitaraksita, also translated herein from the original Sanskrit for the first time. The translations are accompanied by an introduction and interpretive essays elucidating and contextualizing the treatises historically and doctrinally-philosophically. Extensive exposition of the yoga practices in the treatises has also been undertaken as a central feature. Additionally, arguments are made for the cogency of the Tantric world-view and practice as well as its relevance to the scientific age. Extensive footnotes and appendices are provided. I am pleased to present to a wide readership these most fundamental expository treatises of Buddhist Tantra by the incomparable Nagarjunapada, master of exoteric and esoteric Buddhism, the completion of a decade-long endeavor. Their importance in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism cannot be overestimated. For scholars and practitioners of Vajrayana Buddhism and anyone interested in Tantra, these treatises should be regarded as indispensable. This item is printed on demand.
