His steadfastness one winter's night, being lowered down the ice-smeared cliffs of Amphitheatre Buttress in Snowdonia with an injured and delirious Army major strapped to his back, earned Lees the George Medal - reckoned to be the only honour of its kind ever awarded for bravery in British mountaineering.
