Schloss sich 1924 den Surrealisten an, enger Freund von George Battaille. 1938 stellte er zusammen mit in- und ausländischen Künstlerkollegen in der Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme, Galerie Beaux-Arts, in Paris aus. Zu Beginn des zweiten Weltkrieges lebte Masson in Spanien, emigrierte dann beim Vormarsch der Deutschen 1942 in die USA (zeitweise lebte er auch auf Martinique und kehrte 1945 nach Frankreich zurück.
