He studied at both Johns Hopkins and Harvard Law, and in Europe he continued his education at the Universities of Berlin and Jena. He was a member of the Grolier Club. He also helped edit the Bibliotheca Osleriana.

It is a fascinating item for those interested in colonial American maps, as this is a special copy of a book detailing one of the most important early figures in American engraving.
