A favourite son of Melbourne, yet also well known in his birthplace, Sydney, Jack Ayling started work as a crime reporter and quickly became known as 'Ace' for his ability to get a 'scoop' story. In this book he recalls covering some of Australia's most intriguing crime stories, from the disappearance of the Beaumont children and the ultimate resolution of the Pyjama Girl case to a real life 'whodunnit' on the Mornington Peninsula and the hanging of Ronald Ryan, the last person to be executed in Australia. Jack Ayling lived as close to the heart of Australian life as anyone. Here he tells many colourful yarns from his career, not just as a crime reporter, but as a sports writer, TV personality, TV critic, Hollywood correspondent, racing writer, fishing columnist, radio star and raconteur. This is the story of Melbourne and its inhabitants in a bygone era when eager young men like Jack Ayling were able to lead an adventurous life in pursuit of the 'scoop'.
