Hard Back. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Assumed First Edition. 373 Pages. This is a used book in As New condition. Maybe read once carefully. Dust jacket has a small chunk out of the back top corner. Thomas Perry's novels of suspense have been celebrated for their dazzling ingenuity and for writing that… is as sharp as a sushi knife. By turns horrifying and erotic, Perry's new thriller takes us on a dangerous cat-and-mouse game that pits two women against each other: A beautiful serial killer and the detective who is determined to stop her. When the cousin of Los Angeles underworld figure Hugo Poole is found shot to death in his Portland, Oregon home, police find nothing at the scene of the crime except several long strands of blond hair hinting that a second victim may have been involved. Hotel security tapes from the victim's last vacation reveal an out-of-focus picture of a young blond woman entering and leaving his room. Could she also be a murder victim? Portland homicide detective Catherine Hobbes is determined to solve the case and locate the missing blonde, but her feelings, and the investigation, are complicated when Hugo hires private detective Joe Pitt to perform a parallel investigation. As the Joe and Catherine form an uneasy alliance, the murder count rises and both realize that the pretty young woman in the security tapes is not a victim at all. As Catherine follows the evidence, she finds herself in a deadly contest with an unpredictable adversary capable of changing her appearance and identity at will. Catherine must use everything she knows, as a homicide detective and as a woman, to stop a murderer who kills on impulse and with ease, and who becomes more efficient and elusive with each crime. Illustrated with color photographs. 'Award-winning journalist Thomas Lowenstein makes a convincing, evenhanded case for the wrongful convic…tion of Walter Ogrod, a man with autism spectrum disorder who lived across the street from the girls family and who has been on death row since 1996. Informed by copious police records, court transcripts, interviews, letters and journals, and more, Lowenstein relates how Ogrodwho bears no resemblance to the man described by several witnesses as a key suspect, and who is not linked to the crime by any physical evidencewas convicted based solely on a confession he signed after thirty-six hours without sleep and being insistently fed details of how he allegedly did it, provoked with horrific photos and with accusations of being "sick" and not remembering his actions. Presenting explosive new evidence discrediting the notorious snitch who sealed Ogrods fate, Lowenstein presents a fascinating character study of a "professional" jailhouse informant and exposes a larger pattern of prosecutorial misconduct in Philadelphia.' Hardback. Zustand: New. The horrific 1988 murder of four-year-old Barbara Jean Horn shocked the citizens of Philadelphia. Plucked from her own front yard, Barbara Jean was found dead less than two and a half hours later in a cardboard TV box dragged to a nearby street curb. After months of investigation with no strong leads, the… case went cold. Four years later it was reopened, and Walter Ogrod, a young man with autism spectrum disorder who had lived across the street from the family at the time of the murder, was brought in as a suspect.Ogrod bears no resemblance to the composite police sketch based on eyewitness accounts of the man carrying the box, and there is no physical evidence linking him to the crime. His conviction was based solely on a confession he signed after thirty-six hours without sleep. "They said I could go home if I signed it," Ogrod told his brother from the jailhouse. The case was so weak that the jury voted unanimously to acquit him, but at the last second-in a dramatic courtroom declaration-one juror changed his mind. As he waited for a retrial, Ogrod's fate was sealed when a notorious jailhouse snitch was planted in his cell block and supplied the prosecution with a second supposed confession. As a result, Walter Ogrod sits on death row for the murder today.Informed by police records, court transcripts, interviews, letters, journals, and more, award-winning journalist Thomas Lowenstein leads readers through the facts of the infamous Horn murder case in compelling, compassionate, and riveting fashion. He reveals explosive new evidence that points to a condemned man's innocence and exposes a larger underlying pattern of prosecutorial misconduct in Philadelphia.

Now Malone discovers that cryptic journals penned in "the language of heaven," inscrutable conundrums posed by an ancient historian, and the ill-fated voyage of his father are all tied to a revelation of immense consequence for humankind. In an effort to ensure that this explosive information never rises to the surface, Langford Ramsey, an ambitious navy admiral, has begun a brutal game of treachery, blackmail, and assassination. As Malone embarks on a dangerous quest with the sisters-one that leads them from an ancient German cathedral to a snowy French citadel to the unforgiving ice of Antarctica-he will finally confront the shocking truth of his father's death and the distinct possibility of his own. ; FINE/FINE.
