Published in Amsterdam, (1811). 29.5 x 23.5 cm. vipp, 20pp of text (one page of text opposite each plate), and 20 hand colored aquatints, each of which is protected by a thin piece of fine paper. The book is ex-library, and rebound--that said, the binding is very sturdy and usable. The big caveat: each plates has a 25mm circular library stamp in the bottom right corner of the image. All of the numbered images are dated 1811; the frontis (which is rebound as though it were a numbered plate) is dated 1805. All plates (except for #1) have the additional London address of Colnaghi & Co ++ This is a classic work on the costumes and dress of the Netherlands. There seems to have been earlier editions of 1803-5, 1808, this edition of 1811, and another of 1829 (according to WorldCat). In the old says we'd call this a "scholar's copy". $750.

Quarto 12 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches, leather bound in half period red calf over marbled boards. Illustrated with a hand coloured allegorical frontispiece and 20 hand coloured plates by J. Kuyper, with accompanying text. Complete. Plates dated 1811. 3 plates and three text leaves with a slight stain in the upper margin, one slightly encroaching. Still a reasonable copy of this colour plate book in a period binding.

3/4 Calf Binding. Zustand: Very Good. 4to. Bound in 3/4 Morocco in the French style in the last quarter of the 19th Century (ca 1880). Borders in double-rule gilt and finely tooled spine in six compartments with title in gilt. Marbled end-papers. Top edge gilt. Polyglott (Dutch & French) edition of traditional costume in Holland at the beginning of the 20th Century. Each of the 20 copper engravings has been wonderfully hand-colored. A watermark on the front of the top edge carries through most of the book leaving water-marks approximately 3/4' down and 3-4 inches wide. None of the text or the images is affected by this. Overall a very pleasing copy of a contemporary glimpse into Dutch life at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century.

It was proclaimed on 19 January 1795 and ended on 5 June 1806, with the accession of Louis I to the Dutch throne. From October 1801 onward, it was known as the Batavian Commonwealth (Dutch: Bataafs Gemenebest). Both names refer to the Germanic tribe of the Batavi, representing both the Dutch ancestry and their ancient quest for liberty in their nationalistic lore.Evert Maaskamp (Vollenhove 1769 - Amsterdam 31 januari 1834) was uitgever, boek- en prenthandelaar in Amsterdam van ca. 1800 tot 1834[1]. First separate edition of this rare guide for tourists to the northern provinces of the Netherlands, Oblong foolscap 8vo (113 x 162mm): [80]pp, with title-page vignette by W. van Senus and 37 finely executed aquatints printed in sepia by L. Portman after G. J. Michaelis, F. A. Milats and others, each followed by numbered letterpress leaf with descriptive text in Dutch and French translation on verso. Contemporary brown half leather with vertically ribbed matching cloth sides, marbled end papers. The plates are of historic buildings, monuments, and statues, as well a scenes of Dutch cultural life, including ice skating, boating, and the like, in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Delft, Haarlem, and other locales. Old manuscript ex libris (in English) to first blank of Ada Sylverwood [?] Eames, 1880, who has inscribed on facing paste-down: "A sacred relic from old Ruddington." A fine example, tightly bound and clean throughout, with strong impressions of the plates. Landwehr (Dutch Books with Coloured Plates) 369. Charming collection of 13 sepia aquatint plates with views of Amsterdam, published by Evert Maaskamp. They include the Royal Palace (interior and exterior), the stained glass windows of the Oude Kerk, a theatre, a concert at the Felix Meritis and several views of Amsterdam's famous canals. All but the last plate were also issued by Maaskamp in 4 instalments with a letterpress title-page, Nouvelle statistique historique d'Amsterdam, each instalment accompanied by 8 pages of text, dated 1812 by Landwehr. At least the present series appears to be later, for the laid paper tissue guards, from a single paper stock, match one from 1826 (Voorn, Noord-Holland 184). With bookplate on paste-down. One plate with a marginal water stain, not affecting the image, some occasional offsetting on the tissue guards and the back of previous plates, some other plates slightly stained in the margins, but otherwise in very good condition. (The title gives publication date of 1808, as is also embossed in gilt on spine foot, but given watermarking, this copy should be viewed as the second edition (the first was issued in 1803) and the first edition issued in English.) Plates engraved by Portman after paintings of J. Kuyper. Colas 1681. Hiler 557. The plates stand out among so many others of the same era for their depiction of people doing things. These are truly genre scenes, as opposed to static costume poses, and they thus deliver visual information about aspects of the livelihood,custom and culture of the Dutch. Foxing of preliminaries and final leaves, with some scattered foxing elsewhere, affecting mostly text pages. Most of the plates are clean or have the lightest of marginal foxing. Joints rubbed.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Fair. Original hardcover binding with all 25 plates present (The frontispiece and 24 other number plates). Book is held together with a wrap to help preserve the binding. Original hand color by Jan Willem Pieneman.
