softcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Publication: Liverpool, Liverpool Echo, 1948 Formatting: 4to, pp. 108. Condition Report: Good. The original pictorial paper boards remain remarkably bright and visually striking, though they exhibit expected signs of shelf-wear, including rubbing to the extremities, minor chipping to the corners, and light surface scuffing commensurate with a children's annual of this period. The blue quarter-cloth spine is intact but shows some softening and fraying at the head and tail, alongside general rubbing along the joints. Internally, the binding remains reasonably tight and secure. The pages are generally clean, displaying age-toning typical of post-war paper stock, with occasional handling marks and minor blemishes. A bold 'CANCELLED' stamp in purple ink is present on the front free endpaper. Overall, a highly presentable and structurally sound copy of a fragile wartime-era survivor. Catalogue Note: This is a scarce surviving copy of the Liverpool Echo's Curly Wee annual, collecting the beloved comic strip verses penned by Maud Budden and beautifully illustrated by Roland Clibborn. This particular edition includes the adventures "The Garden Cup," "The Mount Neverest Expedition," "The Scholar Mouse," and "The Rabbit Revolution." The Curly Wee comic strip was a staple of the Liverpool Echo and syndicated globally, beginning in 1937 and running for decades. Collections of these early strips in their original board bindings are increasingly scarce on the open market, as their primary audience of young readers ensured few copies survived in collectible condition. The presence of the 'CANCELLED' stamp to the preliminary leaf suggests an institutional or library provenance, though it remains an otherwise highly desirable copy for collectors of British comic history and regional ephemera. Step into the whimsical and satirical world of Fur-and-Feather Town with Count Curly Wee, the upstanding aristocratic pig in a top hat, and his array of animal companions. Originally captivating readers of the Liverpool Echo from the late 1930s onwards, this charming annual compiles four classic episodes of the rhyming comic strip. From the fierce horticultural competition of "The Garden Cup" to the daring heights of "The Mount Neverest Expedition," Maud Buddenâs clever verses and Roland Clibbornâs expressive, vibrant illustrations offer a delightful and enduring glimpse into mid-20th-century British children's humour.
