It is not only their small number and rarity that distinguishes these works from the mass-production characteristic of Cranach's time in Wittenberg, where he moved in 1505 to become court painter to the Electors of Saxony; it is their at times almost raw expressivity that differentiates them so dramatically from the courtly-elegant manner typical of Cranach's later works.
