Scott's handwriting is not entirely legible. ONE: 'Wednesday', dated by Broadly 'March 1887.' 1p, 12mo. In good condition, with glue from mount adhering to the blank reverse. Folded once. Signed 'Clement Scott'. On the question of 'the letter from the impertinent idiot Mr James Runciman' he comments: 'He thinks that calling a man "Tommy Rot" is a complaint! I conclude that he must be a madman'. The letter concludes: 'I hope that [today?] his master will be in prision'. TWO: 2 October 1901. 2pp, 12mo. The two leaves, each with a mourning border, are attached by a strip of tape, and with more tape from mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. Otherwise in good condition, lightly aged and folded once. Signed 'CS'. (With regard to the content of this letter it is worth noting that Broadly had fled to the continent after the 1889 Cleveland Street Scandal, and had ended up in Belgium, where the following year he was editing the English-language 'Belgian News'.) Begins 'My dear AMB / I think it is very silly to write as you do and wilfully to misconstrue me / It is perfectly true I was invited to dine at Liverpool Street before the Belgian Expedition'. There follows a passage in which he says he has 'nothing to disguise', having been followed out into 'a passage [?] by a waiter who thought I intended to "bilk" him'. 'But what does it matter: I did not complain. The complaint comes from you a [?] person I have not injured you in any way.' He concludes: 'Please god we shall meet and that often. I think of you with nothing but kindness.' Also present is a slip of paper on which Scott has written: 'P.S / Have you any 'Harris' news [presumably relating to Frank Harris] to give me for my Friday Column. According to Russell's entry in the Oxford DNB, while reporting on the Civil War, he was described by one American newspaper as 'the most famous newspaper correspondent the world has ever seen'. The inscription on his memorial in St Paul's Cathedral calls him ''the first and greatest of War Correspondents'. He coined the phrase 'thin red line', was instrumental in the sending of Florence Nightingale to the Crimea, and is said to have written the report that inspired Tennyson to write 'The Charge of the Light Brigade'. Like Broadley (whose omission from the DNB is as scandalous as his career), Russell was an active freemason. 2pp, 12mo. In trimmed windowpane mount. Boards faded and marked, with rubbing and wear to edges and extremities; leather with associated age wear. Several old mechanical piercing/puncture holes pass through the front board/endpapers and into the early leaves, diminishing through the opening portion of the volume to approximately p.29. These have been physically inspected and are piercing holes rather than insect or worm damage. The piercing appears principally confined to the opening portion of the book and does not appear materially to impair the legibility of the printed text in the leaves inspected. Printed title page with noticeable foxing and scattered spotting; endpapers also foxed and marked. Text with general age-toning, moderate scattered browning and occasional spotting consistent with an early nineteenth-century folio. The hand-coloured aquatint plates are generally Good to Very Good and form the great strength of the copy. Colour remains attractive and often notably bright. Some plates show scattered spotting, foxing or light marginal toning, with occasional offsetting or handling marks, but the principal image areas are generally well preserved. The plates of Boadicea, the Grand Conventional Festival of the Britons at Stonehenge, Roman British Priestesses, Hibernian Costume, Pagan Irish Costume and the Saxon Chief are particularly appealing.
