In den WarenkorbCouverture souple. Zustand: Moyen. Abrégé de Mein Kampf. Pages choisies et commentées par N. Marceau. Paris. Editions du Comité Thaelmann. 1938.

Zustand: Good to near fine condition. First censored edition. Quarto. 20 leaves. Original stiff gray wraps with red publisher's device and black lettering on cover, protected by modern mylar. Title page with black frame. Historiated initials. Typography by V. Glaeser. The catalog contains a contribution by A. Marceau and a foreword by Romain Rolland. It features the linocuts by Kivitz and a meticulous event calendar "Germany Invaded By The Enemy 1933-1937," providing a detailed overview of the Nazi reign during this time month by month. The original edition was removed from the market, due to a protest by the Nazis, and subsequently this edition was the first censored edition to be published. Exil Archive 3007. However, four of Kivitz's graphics had to be removed. A rare and presumably the last publication of the artist. Heinz Kivitz was a German artist known for his woodcuts, illustrations and his antifascist stance. He survived the concentration camp for political prisoners in Kemna and that of Börgermoor. Kivitz had been arrested after the Nazis took power and was released in 1934. With the help of Ernst Rowohlt Kivitz went into exile in Denmark, where he met Bertolt Brecht, then to France and started to engage in the fight against the Nazis. As a response to the Hitler regime popular fronts emerged in France and Spain. "Fascism started the world war in Spain and therefore will become its tomb." (Sixth text leaf). In 1938 Kivitz joined the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War and vanished. Kivitz illustrations during the time at the publishing house Rowohlt included works of William Faulkner, Cervantes' Don Quichotte and others. He joined the Union des Artists Allemands Libres in 1937 and began to fight National Socialism. The exhibition "Cinq Ans De Dictature Hitlerienne" was organized by this group and installed at a local Union hall. It is said that Kivitz cut linoleum from the floor under his bed to make linocuts for the catalog accompanying the exhibition, depicting the horrors of Nazism. The catalog contains ten full page linocuts by Kivitz depicting the horrors of fascism vividly, and eighteen small reproductions cynically illustrating the consequences of the brutal fascist reign. In these small linocuts Kivitz depicts welfare measures in fascist societies, essentially consisting of "handing out bread," or the downward trend of proud workers from the beginning of the Nazi reign to date, and demonstrating the enormous increase of military spending during the time from 1933 to 1938. Next to Kivitz the artist Jean Kralik, Heinz Lohmar and E. Oehl, among others, worked with Kivitz on this project. Among his many public expressions against fascism is an open letter to Hitler published in the newspaper of the Union. Text in French. Wraps with very light wear along edges with small paint stains on covers. Block lightly age-toned, not affecting images.…
