Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Anne Noggle (1922-2005) was a portrait photographer whose unique vision has shaped the medium in ways that have yet to be adequately acknowledged. Her self-portraits, her portraits of old women, and her abiding interest in women in the military are like nothing else in the history of photography. Suffusing her photographs are her profound joie de vivre, humor, and defiant humanism. Portfolios of work selected by the Anne Noggle Foundation are joined with an essay discussing Noggle's life and work by Lili Corbus and a foreword by cultural critic Lucy Lippard. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hard cover dust wrapper, xiv/318pp. Very light wear to edges; a near fine copy. The world's first women combat pilots were members of the Soviet Army Air Force, flying fighters and bomber aircraft opposite the Luftwaffe. 30 women flyers received Hero of the Soviet Union awards, one of that nation's highest honours. During three visits to Moscow during and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Noggle interviewed more than 70 of these veteran pilots. Freed by "glasnost" to speak openly of their experiences, they told of flying flimsy aircraft and watching many of their friends - as well as foes - fall to earth in flames. But equally courageous were the women's efforts to show the Red Army that they were adequate to the great role they sought. The women had to grapple with distrust from male pilots and officers, against whom they eventually prevailed. War, Stalin-era politics and human emotion mix in these first-person accounts.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good +. First edition. SIGNED. Small square quarto [25cm x25cm]. Black cloth over boards, with title stamped in silver on spine. Spine ends a touch rubbed. Mild toning to edges of textblock. In a dust jacket with spots of soiling and rubbing. Laid in Anne Noggle "In Memoriam" clipping. Signed by the author in black ink on the title page. As an adolescent, Anne Noggle definitively decided to pursue aviation after seeing Amelia Earhart at a Chicago air show. She became a Woman Airforce Service Pilot (WASP), fighting in the last years of WWII. After developing breathing issues, she retired as a pilot in 1959. Noggle went back to school; she earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in fine art from the University of New Mexico, graduating in her late 40s. Her interest was photography, and her primary focus was documenting the aging process in women. She referred to this subject as, "the saga of the fallen flesh." She did not shy away from self-portraits, notably taking close up shots of herself while healing from a face lift. "Silver Lining" was the first published book of her collected photography, and it is a powerful look at the unique yet universal experience of female aging.

Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. An original, unframed gelatin silver print, "Yolanda: Sic Transit Gloria Sepse," titled, dated 1983 and signed by Noggle in pencil on verso. Image size 12-7/8 x 18-3/4 inches; paper size 16 x 20 inches. Fine. No visible flaws. As Noggle's friend, Yolanda Belloli appeared frequently in the artist's work, and numerous images of her appear in Noggle's 1983 book Silver Lining. The Latin title of this image--which roughly translates as, "So glory fades a bit"--underscores Noggle's unblinking interest in aging. From the artist: "I photograph people, most often older women, focusing on the tension between the iron determinant of age and the individual character of the subject. I try for images that go beneath the surface into that unchanging arena of the human psyche, formed in early life, which grows into maturity but does not relinquish its basic character throughout one's life. That deepest self, discernible only to one who is patient, watchful, and perhaps older oneself. The image I seek is of youth betrayed by age, of spirit strong but fragile with time. I want to show who the people in my pictures are, and how damned difficult it is as each of us in our time becomes them." Signed by Author.
