This compelling volume presents a detailed account of numerous shipwrecks, illustrating the perils faced by seafarers and the unforgiving nature of the sea. O'May meticulously uncovers the stories behind these lost vessels, from grand sailing ships to smaller coastal traders, detailing the circumstances that led to their demise. The narrative provides a vivid historical record, preserving the memory of these significant events and the lives impacted by them. It is an essential read for anyone interested in naval history, maritime archaeology, or the rich, often turbulent, past of Tasmania's waterways. Hardback.

Hardcover. Zustand: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Map (illustrator). Apparant First. While the book is undated this first edition probably dates from the early 1970s. However it reaches back to 1797 when the first recorded wreck on the hostile coatline of Australia's island state occurred. This was the Sydney Cove, wrecked on what became known as Preservation Island. The last recorded loss for the main section of the book, covering Tasmania, is for 1951 with other sections listing wrecks for King and Macquarie islands, followed by chapters detailing lighthouses and vessels hulked at Hobart, plus an unknown wreck from 1940. This book provides a comprehensive record of maritime losses in Tasmanian waters over more that 150 years and an enduriung reminder of the island's dangerous waters and coastline. Probable first edition c 1970, 214 pages including index, b/e photo frontis and 44 b/w illustrations , mainly photos with some art, collected at back, six-fold colour map inside back cover with short tear from edge centre horizontal fold. Red hard covers slightly faded with dulled front/spine titles and small spot lower front adjacent spine hinge, light bumping to corners, small stamp lower title page stating "(Registered at GPO Hobart for transmission through the Post as a book)", text block otherwise excellent, no inscriptions.
