Text pages are clean though the end pages and pastedowns show foxing spots. The only evidence of handwriting found in the book is on the front end page, upper corner, where you can just barely see were and all price was once penciled and then later erased. Copyright page states third edition. The reason for the lower condition grade is only because of the marks on the exterior cloth boards of the book.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Possible First Edition of this 'new edition of the old edition.' The old edition being titled The Gasoline Automobile. For an explanation read the first paragraph of the Preface at the end of this description. In either case, the book is very rare. I found only one other copy for sale on the Internet. This book is in very good condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are quite clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. There isn't much wear, some crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine, a few dents and scratches on the rear cover, and a light crease above the front bottom corner and below the front top corner. The edges and corners are in solid shape. The page edges look very good. The spine has a slight forward lean, but this 678 page book is very solidly bound from cover to cover. In scrolling through the pages, I found only three instances where there was a very slight space between two facing pages. All six pages are solidly, tightly bound from top to bottom. The covers of the book are very solidly bound as well, no spaces between either of them and any of the pages. The pages are exceptionally clean. Going through I found only one or two spots. There isn't any foxing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The only real imperfection with regard to the pages is a waviness off their bottom edges, something must have pressed against them there. It's the case on almost all the pages. It has no bearing on one's ability to read. On the other hand, there are no corner creases, no placeholder creases. There is so only one teeny tiny tear off the bottom edge of one page, far from the print. From the Preface: 'The present volume was written to take the place of Vol. II of The Gasoline Automobile, of which latter four editions were printed between 1912 and 1920. The chief reason for issuing it under a new title, rather than calling it a new edition of the old volume, is that the scope of the work is been changed somewhat. The old volume dealt with both design and production methods while the new deals with design only. But while the scope thus has been narrowed in one respect, it has been broadened in another, in that more attention is given to heavy commercial vehicles and that agricultural tractors also are dealt with. Another reason justifying the new title is that although a certain amount of material, notably mathematical discussion of fundamental relations, has been carried over from the old volume, the great bulk of the material is new.'.…
