While pigs and deer are the most sought after by NZ hunters, small game, which is more accessible, requires less equipment and physical endurance and is often more abundant, attracts those who enjoy the outdoors and the thrill of of a chase that requires less time, expense and commitment to rugged bush country. Some species of small game are also pests and are oten hunted with popularion control the objective. Brad Parkes, however, writes from the perspective of a sportsman and gives his attention to species that have attracted less attention than bigger quarry. Brad began his pursuit of small game as a young boy and by his early 20s had established the NZ Small Game Shooters Sporting Association. That was in 1972 and close to 20 years later this book containing his accumulated wisdom and advice to novices (and veterans) of the sport was published. It opens with a summary of his experiences in the "early days", followed by chapters on equipment needs, an assessment or rifles (mainly 22s), shotguns plus technical and ballistics information. With most small game hunting carried out on developed land the author points out the importance of observing courtesy to landowners and the basic ethics of hunting, plus some sage words on firearms safety. Different chapters cover rabbits, hares, wallaby and goats. Other subjects include night shooting, and skinning and curing Possum are largely ignored as the author does not consider "a dazzled animal stuck up a telegraph pole" to be game. His book was a valuable addition to NZ hunting literature, with little previously published on smaller game animals.
