In Crossroads of Jewish Bratislava, the author identifi es several key junctures that determined the history of Jews in Bratislava between the 19th and 21st centuries, especially in terms of their culture and way of life. The fi rst part of the book (History) provides an overview of historical milestones, with a particular emphasis on the two totalitarian regimes (the Wartime Slovak State and Communist Czechoslovakia 1948-1989). The second part, entitled Dilemmas, examines the current situation of Jewish cemeteries, the consequences of the Holocaust, and the ongoing transformations of Jewish holidays. The author's research leads to the conclusion that traditional manifestations of Jewish culture are being reshaped by factors of selectiveness, streamlining, and individualisation.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Gebrochener Buchrucken. Mozaika zidovskej Bratislavy je poskladana z obrazkov medzivojnoveho obdobia, ale aj zo smutnych spomienok na holokaust. Ilustruju nazorovu pestrost zidovskej komunity, i roznorodost kontaktov s inymi etnikami a nabozenstvami. Nebol by to vsak zidovsky pohlad, keby zdanlivo jednoznacny obraz pluralitnej, tolerantnej a multikulturnej spolocnosti nezahmlieval (neraz neprijemnymi) pochybnostami. Tato mozaika uz nikdy nebude uplna. Pocas holokaustu zahynula vacsina bratislavskych Zidov, dalsi hned po oslobodeni opustili mesto i krajinu. Zo spektra nazorov uplne vypadli dve kedysi rozhodujuce zlozky komunity. Stratili sa predovsetkym najpocetnejsi ortodoxni veriaci, ich hodnoty, kultura, sposob zivota. V minulosti boli sucastou bratislavskej kazdodennosti, dnes su prejavom vzdialenej exotiky. Z mesta sa vytratili aj sionisti, ktori hromadne odchadzali do Palestiny / Izraela. Prave tieto skupiny pred vojnou najviac reprezentovali zidovsku komunitu. V Bratislave po roku 1945 ostali najma sekularni Zidia. Ich spomienky na medzivojnove roky dnes predstavuju najdolezitejsie, neraz dokonca jedine kamienky do mozaiky zidovskej Bratislavy.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Based on his own research within the Project VEGA 2/0099/11 Adaptation of the City Inhabitants in the Processes of Social Changes, Peter Salner, the researcher of the Institute of Ethnology of SASc in Bratislava looks for an answer to the question whether the processes in the past decades represented an identity transformation or a tendency toward dissappearance of the Jewish community. The Introduction contains characteristics of the applied research techniques. The first chapter deals with the community in the process of the ghetto opening at the end of the 18th century; it focuses on the Holocaust survivor's identity and their attitude to Judaism. The second chapter analyzes the children of the Holocaust . The impact of diverse factors (religiosity, Israel, Slovakia, Holocaust, Communist society) on identity of the children of the Holocaust is studied here. The concluding chapter resumes that the processes, which have been taking place in Slovakia at the present time, represent the identity transformation, but not the disappearance of the Jewish community. Reviewers: Assoc.Prof.Alexandra Bitu íková,PhD., Monika Vrzgulova, PhD.
