Paris et ses ruines en mai 1871 est l'extravagant récit illustré de la destruction de Paris lors de l'Année Terrible (Nantes, Henri Charpentier, 1872). Paru donc un an après la Semaine Sanglante (d'autres éditions en 1873 et 1874), l'in-folio de Victor Fournel… impressionne par sa taille monumentale ? il mesure 50 x 35 cm (épais de 3,5 cm) ? autant que par la large part donnée à l'image dans sa présentation des événements : le tome compte 116 pages de texte et 20 planches lithographiques. Ces dernières, réalisées par toute une équipe de lithographes (Sabatier, Ciceri, Ph. Benoist, David, A. Adam S., entre autres), offrent au lecteur des vues architecturales et topographiques de Paris avant, durant et après les événements de 1870-1871 (la seule exception : une image de l'exécution de l'archevêque de Paris, Darboy). Et elles sont magnifiques : Paris et ses ruines figure à côté de Paris incendié de Georges Bell (pseud. de Joachim Hounau; Martinet, 1872) parmi les ouvrages qui combinent, somptueusement, mot et image, texte et support visuel, pour instrumentaliser les ruines produites à l'époque. Bell se sert de gravures pour complémenter son histoire détaillée des destructions des incendies de la Commune, tandis que l'ouvrage de Fournel puise sa force dans la couleur fournie par l'image lithographique. (Le Guide-Recueil de Paris-Brûlé de Pierre Petit, Dentu, 1871, s'approprie l'image photographique d'avant et d'après dans un but pareil). Tous les deux ouvrages empruntent les ruines comme documents historiques sans toutefois les vider de tout intérêt esthétique. Au contraire, l'esthétique de l'image en vient presque à justifier l'objet (le livre) au détriment de la lecture de l'histoire proposée.

Louis-Théophile Marie Rousselet est un géographe, archéologue et photographe français né à Perpignan le 15 mai 1845 et mort le 19 novembre 1929, ayant effectué des explorations ethnologiques et archéologiques en Inde et dans l'Himalaya, et secrétaire de la Société d'anthropologie de Paris. Louis Rousselet, accueilli par les Anglais et les rajahs, fit un travail documentaire sur l'Inde de 1864 à 1870, où il fit essentiellement des photographies d'architecture et des portraits de dignitaires.

Reliure en bon état mais avec quelques petits défauts aux extrémités, qq. coins légèrement émoussés. Intérieur dans un état de fraicheur remarquable : sans rousseurs, ni tâches ! Bel exemplaire , complet, d'un des plus beaux livres jamais publié sur une des plus villes du monde. Le livre contient 100 lithographies hors texte, tirées sur fond teinté et, pour certaines, rehaussées en couleurs. Les planches sont de Philipped Benoist, Arnout , Bayot, Ciceri. Avec 38 vignettes gravées au bois par Benoist et Catenacci. L' apparition de la photographie s'avère fatale pour la lithographie topographique, condamnant à la disparation les dessinateurs de vues. Ce livre s'inscrit dans la phase de transition. Les grandes lithographies sont exécutées d'après des photographies ; 2 vues aeriennes sont d'après des photos prises à bord d'un ballon captif. Fine complete copy of one of the nicest books ever published on Paris. It contains 100 beautifully executed large lithographic views of the city ; many based on photographs. There are even two bird-eye's views taken from abord a balloon. The views of the newly constructed ''Haussmann boulevards'' are convincingly real and lively as they were also based on photographs. This remarkable fresh copy is free from foxing and other stains. Only the publisher's binding shows some minor traces of use and rubbing.
