Near fine copy in dust jacket, tape ghosts to flaps, not price clipped, $2.50 intact, very light wear at extremeties. Nigel Strangeways was employed to investigate a minor mystery in the offices of the publishing house of Wenham and Geraldine. Someone had maliciously tinkered with the proofs of an autobiography in which a retired and outspoken General had savagely attacked one of his colleagues. Consequently the firm was threatened with a disastrous libel suit. Strangeways had not made much headway before somebody's throat was cut on the actual premises of that discreet and reputable firm. S. Forester (1899-1966). Loa was not just king of his Central African tribe, he was a god to his people. He controlled life and death in his village. Then he turned outward and conquered his neighbors. He felt very fierce. But this was not to last. Europe was on the march in Africa, and destiny in the form of King Leopold's agents trod on Loa. They sacked his kingdom with an avarice unimaginable to the natives. Soon nothing was the same, nor would it ever be again. Quite scarce in this first edition.

Yet peace continues to elude Horatio Hornblower overseas. As an admiral struggling to impose order in the chaotic aftermath of the French wars, Horatio Hornblower, Commander in chief of His Majesty's ships and vessels in the West Indies, must still face savage pirates, reckless revolutionaries and a violent hurricane. And while his retirement at half pay might well be in sight, Hornblower will need every ounce of his rapier wit and quick thinking and not to mention his courage and leadership to ensure that the lasting peace in Europe reaches the turbulent seas of the West Indies. This is the tenth of eleven books chronicling the adventures of C. S. Forester's inimitable nautical hero Horatio Hornblower. Quite a scarce book.
