Bound with the original half titles, endpapers and blanks. Complete in two volumes. ESTC No.T99684 Final advertisement leaf Volume II. This collection of letters to young ladies is, ".calculated to improve the heart, to form the manners, and enlighten the understanding," and was originally dedicated to Queen Victoria. The epistolary work provides hints on religious knowledge, politeness (especially letter writing), accomplishments (needlework, music, dress, politeness), and proper conduct. Bennett was curate of St. Mary's parish church in Manchester and found success in writing conduct literature for women. In a contemporary full tree calf binding. Externally, with rubbing to the spine labels. Front hinge of Vol I strained but holding, following the front blank. Rubbing resulting in minor loss to the head of the spines. Four essays pertaining to female education, including: survey of the treatment of women around the world and the neglect of their education; observations on the ways in which the treatment of females affects society; the nature, quality and extent of female talents; and reflexions (sic) on the dangers and insufficiency of boarding schools. Abigail Adams, wife of the second president of the US and a staunch supporter of women's education, read this work in 1794 and recommended it to her husband in part because the author had carefully examined the subjugation of women throughout history. Early owner signature, Henry Remsen 1795, fully signed in ink on the top of the title page. This is likely Henry Remsen, Jr. (1762-1843) who served as private secretary to Thomas Jefferson during Jefferson's presidency. Jefferson wrote to Remsen in 1795, in Philadelphia, for help with acquiring items needed at Monticello. The signature appears without "Jr."; Henry Remsen stopped signing with junior following the death of his father in 1792. The Remsen signature in this volume is the same as the one which appears on the title page from the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University copy of The Federalist (1788 first edition), but without the "Jun". 12mo, 83, [1] pp. In the original brown calf boards lacking spine.iIternally there is some page cornor bending, otherwise good condition. Marble endpapers to match. Modern bookplate on the front pastedown. Half title. 50 hand-colored engraved plates by Sowerby on the title page, but there are actually only 44 plates, 3 engraved geological plans with hand-colored details, and 1 folding hand-colored engraved plate of geological sections. One extra uncoloured plate not called for after Plate 44. Overall a very attractive and fresh copy with very bright colouring. A very rare item. An IMPORTANT WORK NOTED for ITS STRIKING COLORED PLATES of BIRDS, REPTILES, MAMMALS, and MARINE LIFE. The collections and notes were done during the four-year voyage of the Blossom, a voyage to assist the expeditions of W.E. Parry and John Franklin. The notes are by John Richardson (mammalia), Nicholas A. Vigors (birds), George T. Lay and Edward T. Bennett (fishes), Richard Owen (crustacea), William Buckland (geology), and John Edward Gray (reptiles and shells). As Beechey explains in the introduction, the appearance of this work was long frustrated and it was only after a full eight years that it saw publication. In no uncertain terms, he states "that it [the delay] has been occasioned entirely by Mr. Gray's failing to furnish his part in spite of every intercession from myself and others." As also noted by Beechey, although the nature of the Blossom's mission prevented long stays in any one locality, the crew did collect an astounding number of rare and exotic species from a good variety of locations.
