Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Anyone familiar with WWII studies in the Pacific will recognize the name Eugene B. Sledge. The author, who corresponded with Sledge 30 years ago, shared the experience of serving on Peleliu in the Palau Islands. Sledge was part of the 1st Marine Division, which led the assault. Within six weeks, the division was decimated, suffering 60% casualties. The 81st Infantry Division was then deployed to secure the island, followed by the 111st Infantry for cleanup operations. This memoir comes from a 111st Infantry member, drawing from the author's diary and letters home. Thobaben's narrative starts on November 8, 1943, as he embarked on a troop ship to Hawaii, joining the Central Pacific Campaigns in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands as part of the 3rd Battalion's medical headquarters team. In addition to recounting his own experiences, Thobaben has conducted interviews with servicemen and women from the Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Corps over the years. His work encompasses a diverse range of perspectives to provide a comprehensive view of combat life in the Pacific during WWII, some of which are featured in this unique account. AUTHOR: During WWII Robert Thobaben served served in the 111th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion. He began as a litter bearer and ended up as an aid man for M Company participating in three Pacific campaigns-the Gilbert Islands in 1943, the Marshall Islands in 1944, and the Palau Islands in 1945 receiving the combat medic badge and Bronze Star medal. Thobaben is a Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Wright State University (WSU) in Dayton, Ohio, where he taught from August of 1964 to November of 2006 teaching classes on Political Philosophy, Ideology, and Theory. He is the author, co-author, and editor of 6 books and 40 or more articles published in professional journals, magazines, and newspapers. 50 b/w illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. The vast majority of soldiers and sailors fighting in World War II did not engage the enemy directly. Indeed, for every infantryman actually fighting, eight others were supporting him--driving trucks laden with food and ammunition, securing captured areas, servicing the machinery of war, and manning desks. This is the story of two enlisted men who served in the Pacific war zone in a support capacity. Theirs is not a tale of blood and fighting; instead it is the story of how they adjusted to the routine of war and the relationships they formed with their comrades.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Ray Hill was a cook and machine gunner who survived the sinking of a PT boat by a kamikaze. German forces in the middle of the Siegfried defensive line captured Robert Corbin, a forward artillery observer officer who later escaped after 140 days of captivity. Arthur Ensley, a B-25 pilot, was shot down on his 79th mission into the Brenner Pass. He was helped by Italian partisans. Don Barrett, a Marine, was involved in three Pacific campaigns--Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu, where he was badly wounded. Fellow World War II veteran Robert G. Thobaben gathered their reports and others from men who were young soldiers in the war. This book presents 30 oral histories, 14 from the Pacific Theater and 16 from the European. In addition to describing their individual experiences, these Marine, Army, Navy and Air Forces privates, sergeants and officers also discuss such questions as why men fight, how soldiers cope, why it is important to record their stories, and what they think about the ethics of war. A collection of 30 oral histories from men who were young soldiers in World War II - there are 14 from the Asian Pacific theatre and 16 from the European.
