Jan Brueghel was a prominent painter in his hometown of Antwerp, a good friend and frequent collaborator of Rubens. What is perhaps less well known is that Jan was also an exceptional draughtsman. At the Snijders&Rockox House in Antwerp, some seventy works by Jan Brueghel are being brought together to create a unique exhibition. These drawings hail from collections held around the globe, including print rooms in Berlin, Paris, New York, Amsterdam, London and Stockholm, and this is the first time that they will all be on view together, presenting a significant cross-section of Jan Brueghel's authentic drawn oeuvre. To celebrate this exhibition, the publishing firm BAI, in collaboration with the Snijders&Rockox House, has published the catalogue Jan Brueghel the Elder - A Magnificent Draughtsman.The book includes a biography, essays by Dr.Teréz Gerszi and Dr Brueghel and his draughtsmanship and six chapters in which the drawings are discussed according to their theme: sojourning in Italy, riverside and village scenes, study-sheets, roads and travellers, views of the sea and ports and coastal scenes, and impressions while travelling. The authors also place Jan's draughtsmanship within the context of his complete works and the times in which he lived, in the process signalling relationships and making enlightening comparisons. 'An English language study entirely dedicated to the works of the Flemish artists and brothers Matthijs and Paul Bril, who lived between the 16th and the 17th century, whose landscape art had a strong influence on painting in the following centuries. The book, generously illustrated, first retraces the life of the two artists and brothers, as well as their works of art, often an exemplary result of papal commissions. Frescoes realized in Rome, in the Vatican and in other Latium areas are accurately described and exposed, with a particular attention to their style, technique and represented subjects: biblical and historic episodes, but especially rural landscapes, of the sea and hunting scenes. Following, a meticulous examination of the drawings that preceded the creation of the paintings, is also proposed in order to highlight their intimism and the evolving messages that will be fully realized and expressed in their works of art. The study then focuses on the frescoes of Paul Bril present in the Loggia della Pergola at Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi, analysing their genesis and implementation. It places Bril in the context of contemporary landscape draughtmanship and analyzes Bril's specific contribution to the evolution of the genre in Rome, from the mannerist views of Girolamo Muziano to the pastoral landscapes and seascapes of Claude Lorrain. Bril's position as a guiding force to two generations of Netherlandish artists who visited Rome and the influence Bril exerted on the development of landscape is also investigated. The final section of the study is a catalogue raisonne of Bril's drawings. While any catalogue raisonne is by nature evolving, the attempt to establish a secure canon is very important in finally placing Bril and his contemporaries in the correct perspective.…
