Ischemic stroke is characterized by rapid onset of neurological injury due to interruption of blood flow to the brain. Free radicals have been implicated in cerebral ischemia and reperfusion- induced neuronal injury. Hence anti-oxidants have shown neuroprotective effect.The present study investigates the effect of methanolic extracts of a natural anti-oxidant plant - Allium cepa on ischemia and reperfusion induced cerebral injury. Global cerebral ischemia was induced by bilateral carotid artery occlusion for 10 min followed by reperfusion for 24 hr. Cerebral infarct size was estimated using triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining. TBARS assay was employed to measure oxidative stress. Elevated plus maze was employed to evaluate short-term memory. Motor incoordination was evaluated using inclined-beam walking test.Pretreatment with onion extracts reduced cerebral infarct size, attenuated impairment in short term memory and motor coordination along with a decrease in mitochondrial TBARS. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Citrus paradisi commonly known as grapefruit, is considered valuable for its medicinal properties by various traditional systems of medicine and aromatherapy, but no significant work has been conducted on its anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. In the present study, extracts of leaves of Citrus paradisi var. redblush have been evaluated for their CNS activities. Phytochemical and chromatographic profiles of all the leaf extracts have been prepared. The extracts have been evaluated for anxiolytic activity using elevated plus maze model and for antidepressant activity using forced swimming test in mice. Methanol extract at a dose of 200mg/kg has demonstrated significant anxiolytic activity as compared to diazepam and at dose of 400mg/kg has been observed to show significant antidepressant activity as compared to imipramine. The findings presented here are relevant as they contribute to validate the traditional medicinal uses of this plant. Hence, Citrus paradisi var. redblush could be developed as potential anxiolytic and antidepressant agent and may prove as a good alternative in management of psychiatric illnesses. 116 pp. Englisch.…

Dans la presente etude, les extraits de feuilles de Citrus paradisi var. redblush ont ete evalues quant a leurs activites sur le systeme nerveux central. Les profils phytochimiques et chromatographiques de tous les extraits de feuilles ont ete etablis. L'activite anxiolytique des extraits a ete evaluee a l'aide du modele du labyrinthe en croix sureleve, et leur activite antidepressive a l'aide du test de nage forcee chez la souris. L'extrait methanolique, a une dose de 200 mg/kg, a demontre une activite anxiolytique significative par rapport au diazepam, et a une dose de 400 mg/kg, il a montre une activite antidepressive significative par rapport a l'imipramine. Les resultats presentes ici sont pertinents car ils contribuent a valider les usages medicinaux traditionnels de cette plante. Par consequent, Citrus paradisi var. redblush pourrait etre developpe en tant qu'agent anxiolytique et antidepresseur potentiel et s'averer une bonne alternative dans la prise en charge des maladies psychiatriques.
