The author details the operations carried out, the bombing in February 1942 of the Squadron's hangar (and other buildings on the R.A.A.F. drome in Darwin) and notes that despite the number 13 known to bring bad luck, the number did not deter the Squadron from embracing and celebrating its name. Also included is a brief history of a new iteration of No. 13 Squadron formed in 1989, known as the 'City of Darwin Active Reserve Squadron'.

Quarto, illustrated printed wrappers, map on both endpapers, [iii], 158 pp., illustrated in black and white, 7 appendices. A fine copy. The No. 13 (City of Darwin) Squadron, of the Royal Australian Air Force was formed in Darwin on June 1st, 1940. They performed weekly patrols of Australia's northern coastline until their detachment to the Pacific theatre on December 7th, 1941. The unit survived the Japanese raids on Darwin. Following their move to Hughes airfield, No. 13 Squadron aircraft harassed Japanese positions on Timor and made reconnaissance, photography, and search flights. On April 19th, 1943, they flew two different types of aircraft: the Beaufort and Ventura. In mid-1944, they began anti-submarine operations and escort duties for the remainder of the year. In early 1945 squadron aircraft took part in combined attacks on enemy-held islands, destroying many Japanese vessels around the coast of Sumbawa. The No. 13 Squadron was disbanded in 1946. The 13 (City of Darwin) Reserve Squadron was reformed in 1989.
