John Stericker's "pre-war assignment to China on the management of large British-owned cigarette factories forms the basis of this book. He looks back with nostalgia on the China that expatriates loved so well, and from the time he stepped on to the Trans-Siberian Express to the moment he entered a Japanese internment camp in Hongkong he travelled with a suitcase and a chuckle.
