Ze koesterde haar onafhankelijkheid: ze kon met haar werk ruimschoots voorzien in haar eigen onderhoud en woonde het grootste gedeelte van haar leven samen met een vrouw. Deze rijk geïllustreerde publicatie werpt nieuw licht op hoe Bonheur zich ontwikkelde tot de belangrijkste dierschilder van haar tijd. Ze kon rekenen op internationaal succes ? zo ook in Nederland. Doordat ze letterlijk en figuurlijk zo dicht bij dieren stond, wist Bonheur ze in haar vele studies nauwkeurig en bezield weer te geven.
