In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. In "the Hellenistic Age and History of Civilization," J.B. Bury discusses important advances made in mathematics, astronomy, and geography; the pattern of the hellenization of Rome; and changing Greek ideas of barbarianism and cosmopolitanism.E. A. Barber's essay, "Alexandrian Literature," deals with the characteristic styles of the period, Alexandrian poetry, and the new prose forms. Besides the scientific and learned writing it is known for, Professor Barber demonstrates, the age produced much popular satiric and moralizing poetry, realistic mime, epigrams, and parodies. As the system of the city states declined, increasing social instability fostered the rise of a number of popular philosophies. In another chapter, Edwyn Bevan outlines the similarities and differences between the Platonic, Peripatetic, Stoic, Epicurean, Sceptic, and Cynic schools and the effect of Christianity on their society.W. W. Tarn's "The Social Question in the Third Century" examines the conditions that led to revolution in the century after Alexander. The author describes the economic disturbances leading to the polarization of classes, and assesses the phases of social revolution as exemplified in the uprisings at Sparta.

Softcover. 10th paperback. xi, [10], 160, [1] p.; double-page line map: Alexander's route, with index to place-names; 20 cm. (Beacon paperbacks ; BP 26) [First printed in 1948: vol. 1. narrative, vol. 2. sources and studies; first paperback edition of the narrative only in 1956] -- `Aristotle's State had still cared nothing forhumanity outside its own borders; the stranger must still be a serf or an enemy. Alexander changed all that. When he declared that all men were alike sons of one Father, and when at Opis he prayed that Maceonians and Persians might be partners in the commonwealth and that the peoples of his world might live in harmony and in unity of heart and mind, he proclaimed for the first time the unity and brotherhood of mankind. Perhaps he gave no thought to the slave world--we do not know; but he, first of all men, was ready to transcend national differences, and to declare, as St Paul was to declare, that there was neither Greek nor barbarian. And the impulse of this mighty revelation was continued by men who did give some thought to the slave world; for Zeno, who treated his slave as himself, and Seneca, who called himself the fellow-slave of his slaves. Above all, Alexander inspired Zeno's vision of a world in which all men should be members one of another, citizens of one State without distinction of race or institutions, subject only to and in harmony with the Common Law immanent in the Universe, and united in one social life not by compulsion but only by their own willing consent, or (as he put it) by Love. The splendour of this hopeless dream may remind us that not one but two of the great lines of social-political thought.go back to Alexander of Macedon.through Roman Emperor and medieval Pope.' Black and white photographic illustrations, xxviii +546 pages, index, bibliography, paperback. Singapore underwent substantial changes during the 14-year tenure of the country's second Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong (1990-2004). Coming after many years of growth and stability, the period brought to office a new generation of political leaders whose task was to sustain and build upon the policies of their predecessors. It was a challenging period, punctuated by the Asian financial crisis of 1998 and the SARS epidemic in 2003. The 45 essays collected in this volume review a range of issues from domestic politics and foreign policy to economic development, society, culture, the arts and media, and assess the legacy of Goh Chok Tong's premiership.
