His father, August Knà tel, was an art teacher and gave him lessons in drawin…g and painting from an early age. In this time, Knà tel developed an interest in military fashion and history. By late adolescence, he was already employed as an illustrator for the graphics-based newspaper; Illustrierte Zeitung, as well as for postcards and magazines. In 1880, with an established reputation, Knà tel was entered into the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts.After his studies, he began collecting books concerning European military history (it is believed that by his death he owned over 9000 titles). As well as an illustrator, Knà tel was a talented painter, who was renowned throughout Germany for his military subjects. He died in Berlin in 1914, and is buried in Saint Matthew's Cemetery in the city. Knötel, Richard (illustrator).

Internally, half title, title, followed by 35 engravings by Batty, each with its own paper guard and leaf of descrip…tive text, not paginated, some light foxing, modern endpapers. (281*190 mm). Batty a Captain with the Grenadier Guards, become an ensign in the 1st (Grenadier) guards on 14 January 1813, Batty served with its 1st battalion towards the end of the Peninsular War, notably at the blockade of Bayonne, before embarking for England from Bordeaux on 23 July 1814. During the duke of Wellington's 1815 campaign in the Netherlands, he fought with the 3rd battalion at Quatre Bras on 16 June. Approaching Bossu Wood, from which the French could outflank the main British position at the nearby crossroads, the guards fixed bayonets and attacked. Thick trees dispersed the men and the enemy 'contested every bush . but [they] could not resist us', despite 'tremendous' losses inflicted by their cavalry, as the British emerged from cover (Brett-James, 56-7). In den WarenkorbWhile only a rough pencil sketch, the drawing is an attractive one, landscape on a piece of wove paper, 20 x 25 cm, with 'JESSUPS' watermark. In good condition, on lightly-aged and creased paper, folded into a packet for postage, with remains of red wafer. Beneath the drawing, in ink in a shaky contemporary hand: 'Lawn view from… the backs of Mount Vernon | This is from the Orange Tree planted by himself.' The reverse carries the following note: 'I made the enclosed rough sketch of Mount Vernon the residence of Genl. Washington when I visited it in 1840 | The Orange leaf is from the Tree planted by him | '. On the same side and in the same hand is the address: ' Esq | Gadsby's [Hotel] | Washington'. Written over the address, in a different hand, is the following: '13 passed the Eveng with & for New York. Met Judge Senator Mr. King Member for Georgia an agreeable man, Mr. Curtis Senator for [blank] | afterwards went to a supper at Mr. Monroe nephew of Monroe the President | 14 Went to an the Eveng. with Mr. Curtis & Wife & Mr. Clay & Wife'. The orange leaf, somewhat dried out and a little cracked, but in fair condition, is approximately 10 cm long and 5.5 cm wide. The Osage orange tree (Maclura pomifera) from which it comes, believed to be a gift from Thomas Jefferson to the Washington family, is still standing.
