In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Beautiful bindings grace this English first edition of Le Grand's Fabliaux, or Tales, Abridged from French Manuscripts of the XIIth and XIIIth Centuries. The ex-libris plates tell us that this set have been in the library at The Glen, of Sir Charles Tennant, and also the Library of the artist, collector and bibliophile Wynne Rice Hugh Jeudwine. About the Work - First printed in French in 1779, researchers find, in comparing D'Aussy's translations with the original manuscripts, that D'Aussy "gave himself much freedom". He translated such classic works as Aucassin and Nicolette, The Order of Knighthood, The Lays of Sir Lanval and Gruelan among others. This English edition is also notable for the decorative devices and woodcuts that accompany it. The first volume contains cuts principally by John Bewick, with a few by his brother. Those in the second are primarily by Nesbit, to whom Thomas Bewick gave the work after his brother's death. Bibliographic Details - Per the English Short Title Catalogue, entry 006295264, this is a re-issue edition, with "Vol. I." added to the title page. Hugo 4279; Pease Collection 73 This copy was noted on page 186 in the 1896 Catalogue of the Library Collected by Sir Charles Tennant, Chiswick Press. Physical Attributes - Each volume measures approx. 24 x 16 x 2 cm. Red straight-grain morocco bindings. Boards framed with an outer Greek key, and inner circle tool, in gilt. Board edge rolled with pointelle tool. Spine with five raised bands; four compartments with a wavy gilt tool applied, "London, 1796" in gilt on black morocco at base, "Fabliaux" in one compartment in gilt on black, and Vol in one compartment in gilt. All edges gilt. Blue endpapers. Illustrated. Twenty-two head-pieces, one for each ballad, by Thomas and John Bewick, among others. In total, 52 woodcuts, eight of which were executed by the Bewicks. Pages Volume One - [4], lx, 280 Pages Volume Two - [4], 340 Condition - See pictures. A few surface cracks at joints. A little edge and corner wear and a rub or two to the boards. But mostly, very pretty. Three ex-libris plates on the pastedown of the first book, one in the second. Verso of flyleaf with lengthy bibliographic info in graphite. Bookseller notes erased to top of 1st blank binder's leaf, but "$1000" slightly visible. Slightest toning to paper. Very occasional rust spot. Slight wave to the paper like it was just taken off the drying rack at the paper maker's; beautiful paper. Bookseller notes on recto of rear flyleaf. Thomas and John Bewick, others (illustrator).…

In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Second Edition. Publication: London, Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. at the Shakspeare Printing Office, 1802 Formatting: 8vo, pp. xxiv, 105, [1]. Condition Report: Very Good. The binding remains tight and structurally sound, with secure joints and firm hinges. The half red calf leather exhibits minor shelf wear and light rubbing, predominantly to the extremities, raised bands, and corners, though the thematic gilt tooling to the spine remains notably bright and unoxidised. The cloth-covered boards are well-preserved with only faint signs of handling. The top edge gilt retains its lustre, while the remaining untrimmed edges show natural age-toning. Internally, the text block is pleasingly crisp; there is some scattered spotting and browning, most evident on the title page and preliminary leaves, but the internal pages are otherwise clean and free from intrusive marks or tears. Catalogue Note: This is the second Bulmer edition of Somervileâs celebrated sporting poem, following the quarto first edition of 1796. The work is notably enhanced by a title-page vignette and twelve superb woodcut engravings executed by Thomas Bewick, based on original designs by his younger brother, John Bewick. This edition stands as a handsome example of the fine typography produced at William Bulmerâs highly regarded Shakspeare Printing Office. The volume is bound in an attractive later half red calf over cloth boards, featuring a thematic, gilt-tooled spine adorned with a falcon and a hunting horn enclosing a hound's head. Copies of this 1802 octavo edition, particularly those in appealing fine bindings with sporting motifs, have become increasingly scarce on the open market and remain highly desirable among collectors of both Bewick's engravings and antiquarian sporting literature. First published in 1735, The Chase is an enduring masterpiece of 18th-century sporting literature. Written in Miltonic blank verse by the Warwickshire country gentleman William Somervile, the poem vividly captures the thrill, tradition, and camaraderie of the hunt. Drawing on the authorâs own extensive experience, the work explores the breeding and training of hounds, the nuances of various hunting disciplines, and the breathtaking excitement of the chase itself. It remains a foundational text for enthusiasts of rural field sports and classic British poetry alike. Thomas Bewick and John Bewick (illustrator).…

In den Warenkorb8vo (210 x 130mm), frontispiece and pp. [ii], xl, 332; well rebound in modern green morocco, covers decorated in gilt, spine titled in gilt; marbled endpapers, gilt edges. First edition thus. This is a publication in which, as the publisher candidly confesses in the preface, 'Mr. Bewick has no concern, or interest whatever', because it consisted of blocks bought up by the Newcastle bookseller Emerson Charnley which he then used without Bewick's consent. Tattersfield tells the story of this edition at some length (II pp. 622-5), and distinguishes it from a later reprint by Henry Bohn (undated, but c. 1850) which does not have Hodgson's colophon at the very end of the volume. Although all the wood-engravings are by the Bewicks (except the frontispiece portrait of Thomas, which is by Charlton Nesbit), the contents are a mixture of blocks made for various publications. Tattersfield TB 2.576. Provenance. Bookplate of C.W. Dyson Perrins (1864-1958), the great collector of medieval manuscripts, books and other works of art.…
