Questo volume esce nell'anno del centenario del Liceo Scientififico Annibale Calini di Brescia. Frutto di lunghe e pazienti ricerche d'archivio, il testo si concentra sulla storia del Liceo negli anni compresi tra il 1923 e il 1950, che furono, com'è noto, "anni difficili", nei quali si verifificarono, tanto a livello nazionale (e internazionale), quanto a livello locale, alcuni degli eventi più drammatici e significativi del secolo scorso. La microstoria del Calini, narrata in questo libro, è sempre vista in relazione a questi grandi eventi. Nel corso dell'opera, l'autore mette a disposizione del lettore un'ingente mole di documenti, in gran parte provenienti dall'Archivio dell'Istituto, molti dei quali vengono qui pubblicati per la prima volta. Dal punto di vista metodologico, questa storia del Liceo Calini intende distinguersi sia dalle "storie autocelebrative", che tendono ad offrire una ricostruzione rassicurante, espungendo dalla narrazione gli aspetti più problematici, sia dalle "storie a tesi", che si fondano su un presupposto ideologico forte, e che tendono a privilegiare i documenti che confermano il presupposto di partenza. La presenza in questo testo di una quantità così ampia e variegata di documenti mira proprio a ridurre, se non azzerare questi rischi, unitamente ad un atteggiamento non prevaricante verso i testi citati. L'autore, pur offrendo in vari momenti una propria interpretazione, si sforza di far sì che siano anzitutto i documenti stessi, nella misura del possibile, a parlare al lettore. Il risultato è una storia molto meno lineare di quanto molti potrebbero aspettarsi, ma proprio per questo in certo modo "più vera", nel senso di: maggiormente aderente alla complessità delle vicende che si è cercato di raccontare. Il ritratto del Calini che ne emerge ricorda l'effetto mosso di certe fotografie, nelle quali, la mancanza di un contorno netto, dà la sensazione di qualcosa che ancora vibri e respiri.…
