In doing so, Stark argues, these figures contended with the utopian vision of the late nineteenth-century poet Stà phane Mallarmà , who promised a âtotal expansion of the letter.â In his poems, Mallarmà claimed, âthe act of writing was scrutinized down to its origins.â This scrutiny, however, delivered his work into an indeterminate zone between mediums, social practices, and temporalitiesâ"a paradox that reverberates through Stark's wide-ranging case studies in the history of the avant-garde. The latter worked for several design studios, primarily for Brian Sadgrove & Associates until 2004 when he decided to start his own design practice, Marnich Associates.
