No binding. Zustand: Good. 225 x 295 mm., early outline colour, in good condition. This attractive detailed map of the British Isles was originally published by Pierre van der Aa in 'Le Nouveau Theatre du Monde', 1713. It is a reduction of Guillaume De L'Isle's map of 1702. The unusual title cartouche features Neptune being pulled by horses in front of a view of London. This is the rare second state of the map published by Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Covens; a partnership founded in 1721. They were prolific publishers who likely acquired these plates around the time of Van der Aa' death in 1733. The first issue of the 'Nouvel Atlas', according to Koeman, bore no alterations to the plates. In the second, Covens and Mortier added their imprint and the number 8 outside the margin lower right.Pierre van der Aa (1659-1733) was born in Leiden, the son of a stone cutter or sculptor. By the time he was nine years old he was already apprenticed to a bookseller. By 1682 he was the owner of a bookshop and auction. His output is so large that Koeman was sure that there were works yet to be identified. His printed catalogue of 1729 alludes to the fact that works could be made to order. As with many of his published books, the source of the plates contained within is various. Amongst these publications is arguably the biggest atlas ever published, the 66 volume 'La Galerie Agreable du Monde'. Provenance: Gebr. Haas 2004; private English collection. No binding. Zustand: Fair. 235 x 400 mm. the whole, with recent wash colour, a separate map plate measuring 145 x 200 mm. printed within decorative border, with some foxing to the margins, otherwise in good condition. This plate was originally from the 1628 edition of the 'Atlas Minor' by Johannes Janssonius (Jansson, 1588-1664). This map consists of four islands in the British Isles. It is ultimately derived from the folio map of the same first published by Gerard Mercator in 1595. There were several editions of the 'Atlas Minor' through to 1651. After his death in 1664 the fate of the copperplates is unknown. In the early 1700s they passed into the hands of Pierre van der Aa. They were included in the extremely rare 'L'Atlas Soulagé' published in Leiden, c.1710. In nine parts, the fourth relates to the British Isles. For this issue the plate was revised, most noticeably with some names anglicised such as the seas. The only title alteration was the removal of 'ol: Vectis' from the Isle of Wight. It was also included in the momentous 66 volume 'La Galerie Agreable du Monde', 1729. The most desirable issues by van der Aa are those where a separate outer ornate frame are printed, as here.Pierre van der Aa (1659-1733) was born in Leiden, the son of a stone cutter or sculptor. Copper engraving, published in 1714 in Leiden by Pieter van der Aa Top left, title in a cartouche with the arms of the kingdom, illustrated with a hunting scene. A nice hand coloured map. Trimmed closely to the edge. A touch of foxing / marking, but not bad. Colours have faded a little. The map is page 19 of the Atlas Le nouveau théâtre du monde ou la géographie royale, published 1713. 230 x 300 mm (9 x 11¾ inches). Pierre van der Aa, together with various Dutch, French, and German cartographers, is recognized for having reproduced maps of Ireland based upon William Petty's Hiberniae Delineatio of 1685, acknowledged as the first comprehensive atlas of Ireland. Petty's original map had been engraved in Amsterdam in 1673 (Tooley, p.93). This map depicts not only Ireland but also portions of England, Wales, and Scotland, along with the islands of Man and Anglesey. Van der Aa (16591733) was a distinguished Dutch publisher of maps and atlases who engaged leading engravers of his time to produce works of superior technical execution and aesthetic refinement.…

unbound. Map. Original engraving. Image measures 7 5/8" x 6 1/4" This 18th century nautical map depicts the Gulf of Campay, or the modern-day Gulf of Khambhat, on the western coast of India. The map is beautifully engraved, showing mountains, rivers, cities and settlements, sandbars, and depths by soundings. Illustrated with both Dutch and Mughal ships, and embellished with a beautiful title cartouche and compass rose. First published in Leiden around 1713-1725, the map reflects Dutch commercial and hydrographic interest in the Mughal port networks of Gujarat during the height of Indian Ocean trade. This map is Pieter Van Der Aa's edition of the William Baffin's map of India, which is considered to be one of the most influential map of India published in the 17th Century and was a big improvement on earlier maps of India by Mercator and Linschoten. It is also one of the last maps published to provide a faithful recounting of William Baffin's seminal map of India, first published in 1623. The depiction of the interiors are especially interesting, The central portions of India and the Indus river is shown relatively accurately. One of the most striking feature of the map, which also first appeared in the Baffin-Roe map, is the "Longue Allee", a route lined with trees from Agra to Lahore. The Mughal Empire, founded in the northern part of India in 1526, continued to grow in size until the 18th century before it started to decline. It was eventually dissolved by the British Empire in 1857. The map is in good condition with minor wear and toning. Narrow left and right margins. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher, editor and bookseller based in Leiden, Netherlands. He started his own publishing and auction house at the age of 21 and went on to produce thousands of maps. Van der Aa is credited to pioneering a separate artwork for the border. Apart from his own maps, he republished maps of various other publishers such as Blaeu, Visscher, De Wit, etc. This map is beautiful example of his distinctive style.…

A striking and detailed copper engraved view of Kanton, capital of the southern Chinese Province of Guangdong, with a view of the European and Chinese ships in the harbour from van der Aa's La Galerie Agreable du Monde. 28.6 x 18cm, with the plate mark - 29.5 x 18.8cm. Number B1 written neatly in ink within the margin. Light fold mark at the middle but a lovely clean image. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was born in Leiden, Holland.
