Gives a vivid picture of the Japanese invasion of the north coast, martyrdom of both Papuan and European Christians, the confusion of the military situation, and the criticism that was sometimes levelled against the archbishop, which often resulted from the difficulty in maintaining communications. Also added are a series of diary extracts describing the catastrophic Mt Lamington disaster of 1951, which wiped out several of the strongest mission stations and killed many thousands of people just at a time when the country was beginning to recover from the ravages of war.
