Volume I has original black cloth binding, clean and solid but with some loss of cloth on the spine. Old paper labels. Volume II is half black leather with marbled boards. The title on the spine is worn, but as with Volume I the binding is solid. The contents of both volumes is clean and unmarked apart from the occasional spots. Uncommon first edition of this valuable comment.

Volume 1 viii, 800 pages, Volume 2 vii, 1-616 and 617-1186 (with title page stating Vol 3). Rebound in tightback style of the period, quarter leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Volume 1 has allegorical fro…ntispiece, 10 other plates all portraits of famous people, and 7 maps. Volume 2 Part 1 (i.e. bound vol 2) has a further 4 maps and 16 portrait plates of which George III forms a frontispiece. Volume 2 part 2 has a further 15 portrait plates. The portraits are mainly after Matthew Shepperson (1785-1874), a Suffolk artist and son-in-law of the publisher Charles Brightly, and engraved by various hands with the imprint of the publisher and dated 1815. External condition is very good, minor wear only, and internally condition is also very good, light very occasional foxing affecting only margins, and occasional water stains with very little effect on the plate images.

Endsheets are a garish faux-marbled red cut from light cardstock. We see no damage to any leaf whether a page of illustration or one of text. However, the backst…rip of volume I is roughly detached (the remnant is laid in), leaving the spine binding-surface looking grim. Even so, though slightly weakened, both front and rear hinges are holding well, without gaps or tears to the endpapers. Lower corner-tips show a bit of card. Volume II is in altogether better condition, with just little losses at the top and tail rims. Even the corner-tips are free of wear. The set of two volumes, as-is.

He entered into numerous Royalist intrigues, settled in England in 1804 and advised the British War Office in their struggles with Napoleon. He died in England in 1823.

In 1946 they landed in Australia where he directed his full effort to developing what would come to be known as semantography, an easy-to-learn ideographic writing system which would enabl…e people of different languages to communicate. - Wikipedia. Upon its publication in 1949, Bliss wrote to 6,000 educators around the world, seeking to encourage interest in his work, but very little was expressed, although he did hear back from a few, including Bertrand Russell and Julian Huxley. Four lines of the acknowledgements section stroked out in ballpoint pen, presumably by publisher. Similar corrections to pages 82 and 665. Both hinges of Volume II open. "Should this manuscript find no publisher [which turned out to be the case] I shall supply the greatest libraries with a duplicated copy, in the hope that a future researcher may come across and use it.
