Excerpt: ... the editor'S preface. since the revival of letters in Europe, the antiquities of Britain and Ireland have been the subject of much investigation. In the course of inquiry, many useful facts relating to the manners, customs, and local arts of the antient inhabitants, have been discovered and authenticated; some however still remain in the shades of doubtful evidence, and efforts to dispel the darkness, by vending the traditions of old bards, indiscriminately, for true history, or by adapting the tales of more modern rhimers, to the purposes of an historical hypothesis, have been vain. They prove nothing but the ductility of some who believe with little examination, and the confidence of others who expect to be believed without any. The knowledge we want (as far as it is attainable) must be drawn from purer fountains; from a nearer acquaintance with the languages and writings of the old inhabitants, than has been hitherto made. Happily, some antiquaries have fallen into this track, and have been encouraged to proceed in it. Relative to our own country, the Dublin Society (so long celebrated in Europe) have appointed a select committee of their A own own body, to open a correspondence at home and abroad, for the purpose of collecting as many documents as still remain, on the subject of our antiquities. Major Charles Fallancey, one of their members, (an Englijh gentleman) has already made a very considerable progress in explaining the old language of this island; the rules of its construction, and the Punic original of many of its terms. He has lately published also, some valuable tracts on the antient laws of this country, and is still enriching the public, with new discoveries, in this almost unknown region of literature. Thus has a satisfaction been already given...
