Being a Mennonite minister he experienced a spiritual transformation and his preachings were more well-received by his many Reformed listeners than by his own Mennonite congregation, with which he split in 1845. After studying at the Seminary for Christian Teachers, De Liefde earned a living from 1848 onwards by writing booklets for Christian education.
